MacBookPro Running Very Warm

I have a two year old MBPro that after about 30 minutes of continuous use, seems to get very warm to the touch. I do use it as it is intended, i.e., on my lap most of the time. I've noticed that it seems to warm up even more quickly if I peruse the many links that UHH posters put into their posts, especially video links.

I previously owned two successive Windows laptops (Dell and Toshiba), both of which, after about two years, seemed to do the same thing and within weeks, both expired with dead motherboards. Both would have cost as much to fix as a new basic laptop would cost.

I'm concerned that the MBP may be repeating the previous laptops history. Do any other MBP owners here experience this or have experienced this?

Get some canned air and give it a cleaning. Check the net for the procedure.

Sounds like they are not getting adequate ventilation. Make sure there is room for air circulation on the underside. Heat is a computer's worst enemy.

I think it is pretty normal, a couple of hours on your lap the MacBook tends to get hot, you have to remember your windows laptops would never run as long on a battery charge so when they got hot it usually indicated a problem. I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro and it does the same as does the wife's 2011 version. Both of them are working great, I really don't think you need too worry too much.

Oh yes and videos does seem to heat them up, good thing in the middle of winter up here, lol!

All my mbp's ran hot prior to my most recent laptop. Photoshop and LR are very processor heavy applications.

Try to not use it on your lap when running video. It needs ventilation to minimize excessive heat.

All laptops suffer from dust buildup in the heat sink. Cleaning will increase life.

might need to open up the laptop if you know how and blow out the dead coachroaches out of it. (Kidding)
Seriously, probably has a lot of trapped build up of dust around the fans
or chutes. A good shot of compressed dry air should do the trick.

Mine does the same thing. Took it to Apple store and they said that is not unusual and not to worry. It is 5 years old and going great.

 You can also use the "Activity Monitor" app to see if an app is using unexpected amounts of CPU or Energy.

Get a fan mat to place it on. Cheap and it allows circulation under the unit. Available at most of the usual places and at Big Lots.

Sometimes a battery going bad can cause overheating because the charging circuit keeps trying to do its job. I had a Toshiba that had this problem and it went away after I got a new battery.
