Okay, here's where I'm at on the lens choice. Can get the 18-300 that is only a couple months old for $500 or the 70-300 for $280. Going to look at the 70-300 in the morning.

Not sure which 70-300 you are referring to but in my opinion, neither are that good over 200mm.
What are you looking for. A longer lens or the wide angle?

Definitely get the 18-300, its a MUCH better lens that the cheap version of their 70-300mm

Nikon 18-300mm is an outstanding lens. I have a 70-300mm which I have only used one time.
No, it is their better 70-300 and it is a surprisingly good lens for the money. Be sure which one it is you're looking at. If it's the older 70-300 it isn't worth much more than $90.00 used.
No, that is Nikons best 70-300mm, its actually quite a nice lens.
Yes, thats the one I have. Its not a bad one, but you get what you pay for. I use this quite often but am not that impressed once I take it over 200mm. Its okay and the VR seems to work well but my other lens is the 24-70 and my (critical) wife can usually tell the difference.
I tried the 18-300 as I thought I might cover the whole range with one lens but decided to stick with the 24-70 (its fantastic over the whole spectrum) and get the 70-300.
No regrets and do often go out to 300 just to get the shot.
My opinion, buy the 70-300
Edit. Just seen MT's comment above.
Quite a nice lens sums it up.

Not really sure about the 7-300 but I am loving my Nikkor 55-300. Full specs are AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm1:4.5-5.6G ED. I am using it for Travel photography for everything from people in Restaurants to landscapes, to Sunrise and Sunsets and I am very pleased. I seldom take it off my camera

So, for $280, if it is in excellent condition like he said, would be a good deal?

If it is the VR lens, yes. Providing it is NOT a grey market lens.

How can I tell if it's grey market? Thanks!

The only SURE way is by the USA Warranty slip that came with the lens when new. Some DX lenses have serial numbers that begin with "US", but this is an FX lens.
If it's a legit sale he should have that warranty. If not, there is a high probability that the lens is either stolen or grey market.
