I currently have a Nikon 18-70mm that I use for most portraits & walkaround use. I am interested in moving up to something better. Looked at Nikon 24-120mm (3.5f-5.6f), but reviews are negative. With a budget of around $500 I can't afford the 4.0f version. Any suggestions as to what I might consider? Nikon or other brands. I do have a 70-300mm Nikon, so I would like something less than that.
Take a good look at the Nikkor 28-300mm VR II, it is a wonderful lens for the money.
By the way, the Nikkor 24-120mm F3.5-5.6 is kind of junky, HOWEVER, the 24-120 F3.5-5.6 VR model is actually a really nice lens for the money. I had one for over 2 years and just shipped it to another Hogger today as it has been languishing unused in my case since buying the 28-300mm VR II, nothing wrong with that lens at all! It does have some distortion around the edges at 24mm that is noticeable on FF cameras, but the beauty of using it on a crop sensor is that you only are using the center part of the glass and that is VERY good glass! Do not be afraid of buying that lens for a crop sensor body, its a real bargain for a walk-around lens right now.
I would say look at the 17-70 Sigma F4 OS - good reviews and at your price !
I will...thanks for the info.
Thanks....good to know that the VR version might be ok.
I'll look at the 300mm suggestion also.
Thanks...took me awhile to reply. The Sigma is $469 new...right in line with budget. Also looked at nikon 24-120mm 3.5-5.6 vr...not made anymore, but on e-bay about $300. Am leaning towords the Sigma. Just have to sell my Browning O/U! BTW....I will probably stay with D80...as it's in shop being cleaned etc. Thoughts on that combo?
Alternative would be a D7000 & staying with my Nikon 18-70mm.....budget again.
Before getting excited about the 24-120 Nikkors, I think you should read the kenrockwell.com reviews of all 3 versions - he even shows pictorial results !

I did read them. Not going that way. Might just keep the lens I have for the time being. Any future lens I'm interested in, I'm gonna rent first.
Thanks for your input and interest.
