DJ, perhaps the photographer was using slave flash units and your flash triggered his flash units, not cool dude.

I can't imagine that you were the only other person taking photos - but you weren't a guest and so he could lash out at you. Your flash wasn't the point, I suspect, as much as the distraction that it caused him. Unless you were physically in his way, I can't imagine that you impaired his ability to take photos.

At receptions I have the DJ announce the cake is about to be cut. Saying "If you want photos, wait till the photographer is done. The bride and groom will remain by the cake for further photos". I have had people with phones almost knock me over to get a shot of the cake. LOL But for your question: if you were using off camera flash, your could have been triggered by the photographer. Your flash could also have triggered the photographers flash. It could have gone off at the same time accidentally. The photographer can set his flash so that other flashes do not interfere. Obviously you took photos before the cake cutting, the photographer should have approached you and set some guidelines.I think his/her response was rude. However, in the future, approach the photographer and work together, that will save a lot of bad feelings on both parties.

photographer charged my DJ table and barked, "Your flash ruined all of my pictures!" Then he stormed off.

Since the normal strobe flash (not so the old flash bulbs) is about 1/1000 of a second, not very likely. I suspect the photog had other issues and needed someone to blame. "all my pics" Hmmmm!
Some preachers forbid flash during the service (what good is power if they cannot abuse it) but digital photog of today generally permits available light photog, and the resulting color shift is semi-easily removed..
Didja know that the "long peak" flashbulbs were available, back in "the day" for use with the 4x5 graphics with focal plane curtains?.. and those curtains had variable slits and variable spring tension which you chose for your shutter speed... OMG! .....and sounded like a window shade going up out of control...(which basically is what it was)... OMG^2!!

I have been DJing weddings for over two decades. At all of these weddings I have always taken pictures, which I always share with the couple and also put onto my web site to promote my business. Following the cake cutting ceremony at Saturday's wedding, the paid photographer charged my DJ table and barked, "Your flash ruined all of my pictures!" Then he stormed off.

I've never experienced this (or anything like it) before. I have always been told that multiple "flashes" have an extremely small chance of interfering with other cameras because of the combination of the very short amount of time the light is on the subject and camera's quick shutter speeds.

Have I gotten wrong information about this?

As I said, I've never experienced this before. At weddings nowadays, everyone with a cell-phone is a photographer and flashes are popping throughout the wedding.

D.J. I think you or the bride should have informed the photographer that you were going take photos during the reception so he could have been aware of your flash.I hope all the photos taken at the reception weren't ruined!

Was the photographer using off camera flash slaves, and you triggered his flash(s)?

I notice from some of your other postings that you own some fine camera equipment. Why not just shoot without a flash? I bet you would still get great pics and unless you are knocking the photographer over in your eagerness to get those pictures, (which I doubt of course) no one would be the wiser.

if you were triggering his slaves, could have bothered him due to his re-cycle time...that is still HIS problem, not yours... But I still think that he needed a scapegoat fer some other reason... Color him "idiot red"...

1. i doubt your flash ruined his pic unless he had an optical slaved flash (as mentined)
2. or if the bg were posing, then saw a flash go off (yours) and dropped pose before the photog got his off
3. the analogy of the photog playing music does not hold. many folks can take pics and not ruin it for the main photog; there is no exclusivity in "reading light". but if all the guests cranked up their iphones with btooth speakers and play music, then it would ruin the dj music. there is exclusivity in "playing sound".
4. or you just got in his way
5. or he was just bemoaning another straw in the breaking of the wedding-photographer-cant-make-decent-pay-because-everyone-has-a-camera's back

Ruined all of his pictures? Just how long does your flash last? Usually it's only a fraction of a second. It sounds like he was off his meds.

1, it would be almost impossible for your flash to ruin his shots unless he's really dragging his shutter for long periods. Even then, there are going to be flashes going off all the time.
I hope everybody responding currently shoots weddings. Not DID shoot a million years ago, your info is too old!

That Photog is a crybaby!! What a whiner!
I don't do that many weddings, but I've never had a ruined shot from someone's flash.
If you see other flashes, including your own going of, it's a sign your definately NOT working hard enough.
DJ, keep taking your shots. It would certainly not bother me any more than a Hog member who shows up with his camera or uncle Bob or aunt Bobba!!
Whoever suggest that bringing a boom box is the same, is not even living on the same planet, jeezzes!
Keep getting permission and let's hope those whining wedding photogs go out of business.
Too bad the whiners card/s didn't corrupt and he had to come crawling to you to bail him out!! Poetic justice at work!!

Not really. Only if the boombox plays for 1/50 sec.

No, you have hardly ruined any shots. He is blaming you for something that is not your fault. You may have distracted him a bit, but if he had been professional he would have dealt with it in another way.

Scot I stopped for the same reason. It had gotten so bad that I actually lost interest in photography for a few years.

DJ As far as taking photos, if you've been following this forum for a while you probably have read that the professional photographers are sometimes putting in their contract that no one else can take photos. I've only heard of one instance where he/she meant what he wrote but I guess it has happened
