uninstalling and reinstalling LR 5

Hi all,

LR5 has been acting up for me for quite some time and I've decided to uninstall and reinstall. When I started to do that this morning using the Uninstall Program in my Control Panel (of my Dell AIO desktop) I got a message asking me if I wanted to let an unverified publisher make changes to my computer. That sent alarm bells ringing in my ears so I said no but what do I do now? Would you have let the uninstall proceed? I have Kaspersky Virus Protection and I also regularly use Malwarebytes. BTW, Malwarebytes always finds stuff. Kaspersky rarely does.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Donna

It takes forever to upload images - stalling at every click and frequently going into non-response mode. Once images are uploaded I have little problem. This has been going on for months.

Uninstall / reinstall is pretty extreme. Did you try to disable your virus software during your import? What are the specifications on your video card? Are you accessing your graphics processor in system preferences?

Lots of things to check before you uninstall and reinstall. But I understand this knee jerk reaction for Windows people.

Here is an Adobe article on how to tell if your graphics card is supported and accessed by LR. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-gpu-faq.html#Update%20your%20graphics%20processor%20card%20driver

Thanks for your input, Capture48. I don't understand most of what you said here, however, my first reaction is to say that LR5 USED to work fine and the computer is less than a year old. Why would any of what you've told me to do have changed since installation?

Do you have previous versions of Lightroom also installed? If so that could possibly be your problem. Uninstall reinstall is not at all an extreme or knee jerk reaction. That is very often the very best and only solution. If you read your SW manual very often that is exactly what the manufacturer recommends. I have had to do that myself and received a similar message. I continued on and that did solve the problem.

I would not worry about the message you are getting, unless at some point it instructs you to "stop". Before you uninstall if that ends up being the solution make sure any other programs you may be running are closed. Good Luck.

Thanks, SBW. I didn't consider it a knee jerk reaction either since I've been considering doing it for months because I have no idea what else to do. I appreciate your vote of confidence.

Donna, probably not necessary, but just to be extra, extra safe before you do your uninstall just make sure you have set a "restore point" on your PC. That way if you were to do any harm (highly unlikely) you can always take your PC back to where you started before the uninstall. You probably have nothing more than some pesky program or tracking SW that has attached itself to your LR and maybe others. Or it could be something as simple as some needed files or execute-ables have been corrupted. That happens more than people realize.

You will be okay. Let me know how you come out.

Thanks, SBW. I may wait til later in the week to do this since I just got Carbonite last night. I think I'll let Carbonite do its backup thing and THEN will uninstall and reinstall LR. I really appreciate your advice.

Carbonite is a great service. Smart move. Don't forget to set the restore point. It is very easy.

Not to make this issue more complicated but before you do anything as far as uninstall you may wish to go under the "Edit" menu and check your "Preferences". Just to make sure Lightroom has not been instructed to perform some function when loading images that may be unnecessary and make it extra slow.

I had incredible slow operation a while ago. Thought about the same solution. Discovered my hard drive was FULL. Deleted multiple backups in the LR library? and freed half the capacity. Working like a charm ever since. Some would transfer those files to an external but I had many many files in there that there was no need to keep.

BTW, I always transfer the photos I want to keep to specific files outside LR so wasn't deleting any processed photos.
