Thanks so much Erv. I feel very blessed to live 2 miles from where all this happens.

This has been an ongoing project at out local airfield for over 7 years. The creator and builder, first saw the plane in the movie, " Those magnificent men and their flying machines" and decided he wanted to build and fly one. The only existing models, are the ones from the movie, and I believe they are still in England. The plane from the movie, and the original would only carry a 90 lb. pilot. A lady stunt pilot flew the one in the movie.
From pictures they obtained measurements and started from there. It had to be redesigned to carry a 180 lb. man.
Long story short, it was inspected by the FAA and signed off May 19th 2015. Waiting on a perfect day(clear and less than 5 mph wind) has been a test of patience. It happened June 24th. Not knowing how the plane would handle or fly, the pilot let the plane become airborne and reach about 25 ft. and then gently land. This was repeated 5 times until he reached the breath taking altitude of 45 ft. and about 150 yards of sustained flight. The pilot said it was stable and predictable. Here are a few shots of that first flight!

Thanks Earnest, I think maybe 1000-1500 ft. will be more in the realm of reality. It lifts off about 28 mph, they are hoping for about 45-50mph cruise. We are hope the cruise is closer to 50 so we can photograph it from a J-3 Cub.

Some people at my EAA chapter (www.EAA64.org)have a disassembled one that they're trying to put back together after, what I guess was a restoration attempt, but it seems someone didn't put reference marks on some of the pieces and can't get it back together again...and they can't locate anyone that has blueprints or assembly instructions, so it's sitting in big sections in out meeting room (the old tower at KCPS). Although I have missed some events, I'm the chapter photographer.

I know George would love to take it to Oshkosh this year but I have my doubts. As you know, the weather has not been conducive for testing this light aircraft, so far 50 ft. altitude and 150 yards level flight. Trying to learn how it lands is a challenge, You cannot do a flare out and stall, you fly it right onto the ground. With the open frame and all the wires, there is so much drag, that when you pull the throttle back, it almost stops flying. Makes for some fun photography.

I'm debating whether or not I'll go to Oshkosh this year. If I do, it probably won't be for the whole week like last year. My brother's flying up with his partner (aircraft/financial) - they have a 182 - and was disappointed when I said I probably wouldn't go up, so I'm reconsidering. I'd like to try to get my vacation next year paid for early and last year I missed an important meeting for work when I was gone so i have to find out when it is this year. I'm on unemployment in the summer because I drive a school bus. Last year (and 3 yrs ago) I used EAA's RideShare and brought up a guy(s) from Australia that flew into O'Hare (2011 just him, last year with his son). That paid for my gas both ways. Here's a stitched pano from last year (North 40 - almost on the polar opposite side of the complex as where I camped. I think it took me at least 1/2 hr to walk there from where I was - a few years ago someone posted a satellite photo of the convention and we each found our camp spots!!!) I probably took at least 3k pics last year...some that turned out pretty nice.

N4743E...sorry it's a bit grainy...even though I was using a 2.8 lens the camera took the ISO to 1600.

Thanks for this shot of Oshkosh my friend, it is remarkably good considering the extreme low light. I recently managed to get the new 20mm 1.8 Nikkor for my Df. scary what it will do. Would love to take it up there and try it out. At 75, long walks and large gatherings make me a little tired just thinking of them
