Crop factor vs. 1.4x teleconverter

Brief and to the point, which option is considered to be best for IQ on a FF camera: a 1.4x teleconverter or switching to DX mode using an FX lens. I am negating the minor difference between the 1.4x and typical Nikon crop factor of 1.5.

TC is always better with a compatible lens because shooting in DX mode discards more than half of your pixels.

Unless you need the extra f stops you loose by using the TC. It is always some trade off. Not so much with the 1.4 but with a 2.0 TC you might be giving up IQ for resolution. Depends on the camera and lens. A Nikon 810 in DX mode is still good resolution.

No one asked about a 2x TC so what is your point? Read the OP and read my reply. Straight and to the point.

I did read it, i was just expanding a bit. My comment about the f stop also still applies

TC. Very few reasons to use DX crop on a full frame camera. Though if you have a very sharp DX lens, and you want to lessen your load, there are some situations where it can be useful, but I would override the auto crop and let the lens project the image to the full sensor. You will get a circle, or an image that is a circle with the top and bottom sliced off. Some DX lenses actually nearly fill the FF sensor. In any case, it will give you more cropping alternatives.

It depends on the lens and TC.

There are reasons to use the DX mode but you will restrict your framing. Cropping can accomplish the same DX size (if that's important) with framing options.

There is no reason to use DX mode. You can crop later. You can buy a DX camera with the same pixel count which give you higher resolution.

Some reason come to mind.

1. Higher frame rate.

2. More images on the card. Especially important if you are running low on space and no spare.

3. Buffer clears faster.

4. You already have a good DX lens and a FF body.
