I've heard of folks here in the good ol' US of A finding rats in the crapper. The rodents are able to negotiate the trap with ease. Jus' shows, its always a good idea to look before your shit, er, sit!

Here's an item from Oregon discussing the problem http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/10/fall_rains_can_force_juvenile.html

I also seem to remember seeing an ad for a toilet which promised to exclude the little buggers with sort of a one-way flap valve.

Ah, yes! Here is a solution from our brethren across the Pond: http://www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk/acatalog/Multi-Flap-Rat-Prevention-fitment-for-drains-and-toilets.html

Hmm. What happened next? Someone yelled "FIRE IN TNE HOLE" and tossed a grenade in there?

What is your favorite snake repellant? I prefer 12 ga.
