I like mobility

I like hand held shots and I like shooting in the woods where it's usually dark. So made a simple square 5' sharpened stave to stick into the ground and clamp my TTL Speedlight to for off-camera flash. Anxious to see how it will work out. Should be able to clamp the Speedlight at various heights and angles to the subject for those close-in shots.

Here's a pic of one I took in my yard with a shorter piece I had laying around at the time.

gv, I'm sure it will work just fine.
At least if you get lost in the woods you'll have a spear to get food with!!

gv, does that mean you also have to carry clamps and a hammer in addition to the spear?!
Might you be better served by a very lightweight and compact light stand?
Since they tripod it could be set up on hard or rocky ground just as easily as on loam.
With a modification it would fold down to about 18" and weigh only a few ounces. Just a thought!
Good luck with your set-up!! ;-)

Yep, I'm figuring at least a clamp. Maybe a hammer but will try without first. I thought about a lightweight light stand but the uneven ground and thick brush would be a killer. Lots of stuff on that forest floor. I think there'll be more flexibility with a long stave to jab into the ground, even be able to angle it over obstacles to get the right location for the Speedlight. And I could also jab it into a bear's eye if need be.

Rock and duct tape?

Seriously, I was thinking of a Manfrotto Magic Arm - or even a Plamp.

Good thinking, gv. Off camera flash is always better
