Just to fill you in about the cemeteries in New Orleans. St. Louis Cemetery, near the "French Quarter" has close to the incidental tourist. Now, you need to be with a guided tour with a licensed tour guide to enter. This change is due to "tourist vandals" who mark on the tombs, steal fire brick, and actually attempt to enter some of the tombs. The money is used to repair damage, and restore the tombs. The other cemeteries are still open to the public.

Thanks Bill:

Is there a cemetery that you could recommend to the newbie tourist who likes old cemeteries? St. Louis, or?

Not Bill but opinions anyway. St. Louis is nice. There is a nice easily accessible one uptown right by Commanders' Palace restaurant (great food), a block from the St Charles streetcar, that doesn't get many tourists. One of the most photogenic is the Metarie Cemetery. I've never tried to take public transportation to it. It's right off I-10 near city park. Google it, it has the most elaborate memorials. There's a couple of other cemeteries adjacent. Hopefully Bill can tell you more.

Longue Vue House and Gardens is very near the Metarie Cemetery. You could visit both in an afternoon. Both are highly photogenic.

New Orleans is full of cemeteries, like most older cities. But, New Orleans is very different, we bury our dead above ground in crypts. Don't forget the "French Quarter" was the entire City of New Orleans in the early days. Cemeteries were just outside the City, in a bayou. Once the citizens walked only to St. Louis #1, outside the 'Quarter" they were subject to Indian attack, and other problems. So, the cemeteries were built just on the outskirts of the City. As the City grew, the cemeteries were built at the outside of the City. You can see the St. Louis Cemetery #1 from Rampart Street, just across on Basin St. You'll need a guide to enter that cemetery. Take the Canal Streetcar, outbound, to City Park, end of the Line. Walk to Esplanade Ave, and turn right, and walk down Esplanade to the cemetery on the left side of the street. New Orleans also has a City Bus route called "Cemeteries" it stops in front of this cemetery. Walk back to City Park, and take a breather at the Museum of Art, then the Sculpture Garden, and the Botanical Gardens. This will kill your day. Take the Streetcar back to the French Quarter, and rest your feet. You'll be hot, and tired from all the walking, and heat.

You may want to know about the weather in New Orleans. I live about 1/2 hour ride from the Quarter, and at this minute it is raining cats and dogs, we'll get about a inch of rain in a hour. Then it will be sunny and bright, then another storm for the evening hours. Mornings are usually dry until Noon or so, then boom boom. Carry a nice sized umbrella, or get a nice rain poncho when you arrive. Have a rain cover for all your camera gear, a black garbage bag will help keep your bag dry in a downpour. August is a tricky month in New Orleans, you may not see a drop of rain, but during hurricane season anything can happen. Katrina struck on August 31, 2005

In New Orleans, safety should be a concern. When I'm leading a tour, or if I'm just out for dinner in the "Quarter" I carry a gun, I have a concealed weapons permit along with my guide papers. The streets are narrow, and parking is scarce. So, every street is filled with parked cars, easy to hide in. If you're carrying camera equipment, you're marked. Watch out for followers, if you think you're being followed cross the street, and walk down to a cross street and take it, look back to see if your tail follows you. Cross again and return to your original street, look back for your tail. If he is still there walk to a doorway and act like your knocking. He'll pass you by. In a business area, walk into a business. Carry two wallets, put some old out dated or closed credit cards in one, with a few bills. That wallet is your "give away" wallet. This is the one you give the robber. Keep your keeper wallet in your front pocket, never in the back. Keep your "give away" in your back pocket. Ladies, carry a fanny pack, with little inside, one Visa Card, and a few dollars. Give them what they want, they will shoot you.

Thanks for the last 3 Bill. Unfortunately I can't carry in the States. Do I understand that you are a guide?
