any thoughts on formattin my card every time I daowload to my computer
Not necessary every time, but if you shoot a lot a weekly format would be a good idea.

MT's right, just format the card in the camera. Otherwise there is a chance the camera won't recognize it. Remote, but a chance.

I do every time. Instead of deleting the images I reformat the card. I "heard" it's a good idea to do so, less likely to have media issues.

As posted above, I format in the camera to avoid issues.

I also reformat every time. Heard/lerned it during an online lynda.com class.
It just seemed to make sence vindicated thsnks all
I,too, need to learn how to get pics from Picasa to UH.Please advise for all.
I seem to need to copy them to my pictures and transfer unless someone comes up with a better way
I NEVER reformat the card after the initial format "in camera" when using it for the first time. I only use SanDisk 2G & 4G cards. I always download and copy from camera to "my pictures" in Windows XP Pro........... Then when they are safely there, I will go to edit - select all -delete. Then I have a blank card to start over. I do not mix cards between cameras either. I have never had a problem with loosing images.
However, my GF who deletes in camera & mixes cards between cameras is having a problem loosing images with her P7100.
The best practice is after you have downloaded your images to your PC reformat the card in the camera. Make sure the photos actually downloaded first. This is the only way that you will have use of the full capacity of the card.
Definitively reformat swaping cards between computer and camera can cause a glitch at times, such as that little switch on the side of the card moving accidentally.
A friend who is a professional photographer warned me against that practice. After doing that for a period of time, his card gave a "full" notice and wouldn't work. After paying a substantial sum to a photo recovery facility he learned to format in-camera instead. That's the only way to completely clean the card.
