Compatibility of Teleconverter

I have a Promaster Spectrum7 2X teleconverter which I use with a
Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens and a Nikon D7100 camera. Does anyone know if this combination is considered compatible? I'm starting to have my doubts! I can't remember the last tiime this TC operated in auto-focus. What exactly does compatibility imply? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of achieving it with this TC? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming it even mounts without damaging the lens, a 2X converter will steal 2 stops. Your f.5.6 becomes an effective f11 and AF will not work reliably if at all. With a few exceptions, most cameras will not auto focus with an effective aperture smaller than f/5.6,

So no, there is no chance.

I didn't really think so but I thought I'd ask. Thanks

Captain didn't even mention using a 2x converter on a 6x zoom. You're probably not going to get the best results photo wise even if you do go to manual focus. I have a Nikkon 70-200mm f2.8, and is good as that zoom is I wouldn't put a 2x on it. 1.4 yes, but not a 2x. I'd reserve using a 2x for prime lenses.

Even on the best prime a 2X will have a negative affect on IQ and focusing speed, especially mediocre TCs.

The later Nikons autofocus at f/8 I have used Nikons 2x III with my 70-200 f/2.8 without any problems and have great shots

Very interestung!! When you used the lens at 200mm (400 using TC). what ISO, speed and aperature did you use? Did you use a tripod? Model camera? If you could post something, that would be great!! Many thanks.

Is your 70-200 f/2.8 a Nikon lens or something else? I was reading a review on the Nikon 2x III in B&H Camera by someone used it with his Nikon 55-300mm (what I have) and returned it because it didn't work. I found out the hard way. It doesn't work with my Promaster 2x either but I bought mine from a mom & pop shop over 2 years ago and I'll just have to swallow it after all this time.

Great shot. The birds seem to be tack sharp. What mtering mode did you use: matrix, center-weighted or spot. Focus area mode? I'm only a beginner so please forgive all my questions. There is sooo much to this hobby and I can't realyl keep up with it all.
