XP problems

I have several machines most running 8.1 but I do have 2 XP machines that started having problems about 3 weeks ago. It seems that when I open Windoze Explorer (not internet) and I right click on any folder or file the hour glass spins forever and everything else slows to a crawl. I have to use Task Manager to cancel Explorer and then the entire interface reboots. This seems to be the only problem as I can do everything else whether in a program or the OS just as long as I don't right click an entry.

Is anyone else having similar issues with XP?

I can't help this nagging feeling that MS has inserted some cripple-ware in an effort to get XP users to upgrade. I have no problem with 8.1 but it doesn't like some of my old hardware, in particular, my scanner which is why I still keep XP around.

It may not be related at all, but I did have a problem with Explorer on my laptop, running 7, about two weeks ago. It wouldn't open anything at all and told me it didn't support those files...everything I tried to use it for got that. It was like the message you get when you try to open a text document with Gallery and it does not support that format??? You know what I'm talking about, I'm sure.

Running all my spyware and malware seemed to cure the issue. I only found one PUP at the time, but after that, I haven't had any problems and Explorer has been acting like it oughta.

XP is the OPERATING SYSTEM not a browser.

Right! I changed my browser and the operating system was better for awhile.

Try booting in Safe mode and see if the problem still exists with Windows Explorer. Enter Safe Mode at boot by hitting F8 several times to get it to accept the keyboard entry.
Anyway, it could be a driver issue, an XP OS issue, a hardware issue. Does it ever "time out" when trying to open the right-click dialog box? Does it ever get an error code of any kind?

As for the Scanner working under XP verses a different OS, you can run several applications in XP mode.

Good luck!

My printers don't like Win7, at all. I've kept my XP machine just for them. Not online, networked, or anything. Wish everything ran as good as XP does.

I thought the same thing a while back, that MS would send a code out to anyone still using XP online. I wouldn't think they would, but then, how the hell would we ever know if they did?

My XP machine runs much better since it's been taken 'off-line'.

I have several XP machines. They're all offline and dedicated to specific tasks. I have tried other OS's on dedicated tasks and the problem is that the more recent systems demand updates and pop up dialogs to tell you that you should do something. These interrupt the task that the machine is running. My XP machines do not have this problem.

So IMHO there are valid reasons to keep an old XP machine running. Just not for normal online use.

Computers do get old and decaying hardware sometimes interferes with the software. Fortunately there are lots of old used machines out there that will run XP just fine and are cheap because they're outdated and won't run the newer systems.

Addendum to original problem: seems Dropbox when accessed from the icon in the clock bar hangs and shuts down. I can open from My Docs but just tried to delete 2 files and the old hour glass just spun and spun.

Also, this is a dual boot system with 8.1 working fine but still needs some program installs before 8.1 becomes the prominent OS.

In answer to a previous question, there is no time out. I tried early one evening and checked on it the next day after work. Hourglass still spinning.

Taking it offline sounds like a plan but for now I still need network availability.
