Elements Upgrade Question

I have been working with Elements 9 on my PC for some time. It began acting up lately, giving error reports and then not sending post processing by saving in the file. If I attempt to print the outcome, it looks nothing like the monitor version and is very dark. My question is, should I be able to install Elements 13 upgrade on top of 9, even as it seems to be having problems.

My understanding and personal experience is that photoshop elements does not come in the form of upgrades.

If you install 13, it will install in a new and separate location, free of any connection to 9 (or any other previous versions of Photoshop Elements).

Whenever I have loaded newer (or older) versions of Elements on my computers, they run completely separate.

Consequently, the problems you are having with 9 will not be corrected or affected by installing 13. This may not be the way lightroom and the Photoshop versions work, but is and has been the case with Photoshop Elements. As far as I know, there have never been any Elements upgrades... only new versions independent from old versions.

Yup, what Kuzano said. I kept Elements 9 until I got familiar with Elements 12. I have a trial version of ver 13, but I don't plan to buy it. I'll just delete it without affecting either of the other free standing versions.

I am not familiar with Photoshop Elements, any version, but the problem may not be with Elements--it may have to do with some computer issues--Registry, corrupt memory chips, outdated BIOS, or others. If you have a Windows computer, you may want to try "repair" of Elements in Programs and Features in Control Panel. You may also want to invest in some diagnostic software, like Norton Utilities. In working with computers, I have often found THOUSANDS of Registry errors in friends' computers; sooner or later, those will make a serious mess of your operating system.

I was previously using Elements 10 when I installed Elements 13. They are totally separate and I can use either, independently.

I agree with the comments above regarding how going to a new version of PSE works. I also agree with the poster who pointed out that your problems may be caused by issues with your PC, not just PSE or its installation. I would get your PC working properly first. If everything also on your computer is working without problems, you may want to try uninstalling and then reinstalling your PSE 9.

As you most likely know, PSE includes the Organizer module and the Photo Editor module. When you install a new version, during the installation process, PSE semi-automatically converts the existing Catalog used by the Organizer to an internal format compatible with the new version. When the installation completes, all of your pictures etc as viewed in the Organizer are as they were in the previous install.

I have had as many as three different versions of PSE installed on my PC at one time in full use. I need to do this because I teach PSE and beta test for Adobe. I make sure the Catalogs used by each version do not contain the same images. My situation is somewhat unique. Most people need only one Catalog regardless of how large it is. Once they install a new version, and confirm the images are as they left them, they delete the old version.

One last point. If you choose to upgrade to PSE 13, make sure your PSE 9 Catalog has no errors, or those errors will just propagate to PSE 13. There are commands to check and fix errors in PSE 9. Lastly, its my opinion that you should upgrade to PSE 13. There has been a wealthy of features and improvements added to the program since PSE 9.

Good luck.
