I went to http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ to get my three free annual credit reports, but I was able to get only one - from Transunion. With Experian, I got to the Submit point, but then it said something about not charging my credit card, and it was stalled there. Equifax said, "We're sorry, for your protection we are unable to deliver an Equifax Free Annual Credit Report over the Internet." They want me to mail a request form and copies of two of the following: my SS card, driver's license, W-2, pay stub, utility bill, lease or deed.

I'm not going to bother.

Good idea. In past years, I just signed onto the "freereport" site and got all three.

Today got a letter from 'United States Office Of Personnel Management'

My personnel data may have been exposed in the latest hacks.

I am getting a complimentary subscription to CSID Protector Plus for 18 months. Got to log on tonight with a special PIN.

I've gotten a subscription like that several times - never any activity, though.

My paranoia rests a little easier because I pay $10 a month for identity protection - I can review my credit reports any time, but it also notifies me immediately if there is any activity - anyone checking out my credit and if anyone is opening up a credit account with my information.

The guy who started one of those companies used to make his SS #, etc public, just to prove that his company offered solid protection. I don't know if he still does that.

I've had only one occasion where my credit information was stolen and used. It was after I rented a car in Arlington, VA. I think someone at the car rental place called a buddy in TX with my information, but I am guessing.
I was lucky in that my credit card company contacted me right away to ask if I made recent purchases in TX and took them off my card.

My CC company has called me several times about questionable charges and issued new cards.

About the guy who used to make his SS #, etc public. He doesn't anymore. A friend in the computer security field told me his identity was stolen a few times as a result and he stopped. When you think your smarter than the person who feels they have nothing to lose you've lost.

My house is paid for. My credit card carries a zero balance and I have no idea what my credit score is, and furthermore I couldn't give a rat's arse what it is. What a satisfying feeling to not worry about such things anymore. But I do keep a daily eye on my accounts.

My girlfriend applied for a job with Homeland Security, and last week she gets a notice in the mail from them that her file has been hacked! These are the same people mandated to protect us from terrorist attacks, and they get infiltrated by some pimply faced Chinese kid?!!!
Is it me, or have we lost it as a country? We used to be kings of the hill in all aspects of society, e.g., engineering, military, whatever. Now we have a country of incompetents (military aside, I know the problem is with the politicos and our men and women of the armed forces are doing a great job,) a generation of narcissists, attached to their cell phones 24/7, cars that have to be recalled on a regular basis, etc., etc.,.
Has anybody else noticed how the quality of work in this country has deteriorated or is it me? I go to get my brakes done, get in my car and start to drive away when I hear this horrendous rumbling. Turns out the idiot that did my brakes forgot to put the lug nuts back on 2 wheels.

My girlfriend bought a $5000 stand alone gas fireplace:

1) The plumber screwed up the gas line from the main to the fireplace.
2) The geniuses who installed the fireplace reversed some component and couldn't figure out what was wrong for hours, until another guy from the company showed up and figured it out after four hours of troubleshooting.
3) The "heat resistant" paint used in the fireplace peeled on the first usage. Three attempts to correct it have failed. The unit was made here in the USA. Rather than replace the failed unit, there will be a fourth attempt at correcting the peeling issue.

They screw up a damn sandwich for god's sake. They forget the cheese and I ask for Russian Dressing and get Ranch.
Is it my getting old, or some romantic idea about the "good old days" that is taking place? All I know is that incompetency reigns.

The list goes on and on. Sorry for the rant.
