You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair,
Ruby are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadows on the wall tell me the sun is going down,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

Over to you lighthouse!

Pixel peepers - It aint supposed to be sharp!!!

Just Dave here...

Photography and art as one! Does your title seriously question that?
Chiaroscuro to the laudable max!
Rembrandt and Carrivaggio (sp?..Italian vowels confuse me...) would applaud!

I get the strong sense of encroaching, and doing so without permission, on this person's most private of worlds...and feel that perhaps I ought apologize for having looked....

A constructive suggestion:
Expand the darkness above his head to further isolate his tortured persona in his personal darkness.

A a strong and most "fixing"..."gripping" image"

Dave

Hello Billy. At what point was this "ain't supposed" to be sharp? When you took it or when you realised it wasn't sharp?

Just curious,
Graham :-)

Not sure it’s safe for me to comment, I feel my comment on your last post may have been cause for it to be taken down but I’m not sure as I received no explanation. This image seems to border on art to me. I’m sure it could have been focused but not sure why it’s not, which has lost the impact for me. I’m loosing the story there. The composition is too tight and centered for my taste like a graphic or something. Technically it seems to dark. All things considered it could just be a logo on a bag of flour or something.

Do I detect a hint of English sarcasm here lol. It was actually OK when I downloaded it and with a normal Billy gritty BW conversion was just fine and would pass muster on the Hog.However once I blacked out the messy background I saw what I wanted and really only then saw the Ruby thing. The blur thing is done with Tiffen DFx. Have a few more with this soft focus look, I rather like it.

Despotic rule means your not entitled to an explanation my friend. It was my picture that was taken down and although many words were exchanged the only reason I could fathom was one of personal taste. The fact that you and other members liked it is not taken into consideration. We are but members my man perhaps the forum is being run by admin for admin? I will leave you to ponder that and question it if you wish.
Ah the blur and the darkness. Dave gets it and you do not which confirms what I really already knew, it was gonna be a marmite image.
Logo on a bag of flour may be seen as a tad politically incorrect here. This guy is black! Do not worry I know what ya meant.

Hi, Frank,
There seem to be two sorts of "Taking down":
Sometimes an entire thread is taken down ( including all associated comments) and in that case it is the original poster who is normally notified as to the reason. If not, usually a request to the Section Managers will eventually result in a response from the manager reconsider for the "taking down" with the reason.

Likewise, when a specific reason for a particular comment being taken down (with which I am personally and abundantly familiar) is not revealed to the "offending" commenter, a specific request for the "reason why" wil usually get a specific response...very possibly one with which you'll not agree, but a response, non-the-less.

It is probably reasonable to observe that, of all the Sections in UHH, the Photo Critique Section is the one most explicitly susceptible to voicing of differing opinions, and thus most susceptible to...over-reaching in temperance...or intemperance ... in expressing firmly held opinions ( this totally disregards the Attic and non-photographic Chat sections where overt discord seems the raisin d'être ).

Thus the managers of the Critique Section deserve a bit of " cut slack" in dealing with disagreements. They often don't deserve as much unquestioning obeisance as some seem to want, but,as often, they do deserve more respect and understanding than they get. It's a fine wire to walk. Without managers willing to keep a Section running, it won't.
Are the benefits of the Critique section worth the occasional disagreeable dust-up? The degree of continuing and expanding participation by UHHers in the Section would seem to be the index of the Section's success or lack thereof.

Just one Hogger's thoughts on the matter.
Dave

Thank you for the clarification Dave. It is good to know. There have been some blanket comments made about critique here and there. Then I've seen the same type of critique made by the one making the blanket statement so it gets a little confusing sometimes.

Sarcasm? Me? :-D

I was only wondering why you felt the need to explain that it wasn't supposed to be sharp if not sharp was your intention?

:-)

I've spent the past three weeks on the Outer Hebrides, Lewis, Harris, North and South Uist, Benbecula and several other smaller islands. Gale force winds and horizontal rain were the order of the day but it was a wonderful experience.

The weather was expected, after all it is the Hebrides. I did have a couple of sunny days while on Barra and some other days where it didn't actually rain, well it wasn't what the islanders call proper rain!

If you are coming Cambridge way then a spot of lunch would be great, just let me know when.
