I'm interested in this workshop by Bryan Peterson.

My concern is that I'll be THE most novice person there and I won't get the help that I need OR I'll be to nervous to ask questions. I know how to use my camera but I still have only been taking pictures for less than a year.

I'm also not sure that the pictures they will be focusing on are my "cup of tea' and yet I feel that learning different things are good because how do I know if I like or dislike something without trying it... right?

I guess my question is has anyone ever done a workshop like this? I looked at the schedule and its very confusing as to how things work and many of the photowalks say sold out so I'm not sure how this works.

I did send a message for clarification to the company but I'm sure they will tell me its "no issue" so I'm more curious if someone here has done workshops, maybe with Mr. Peterson or any others and how did you like it or maybe no.

I'm in NE Indiana so its a 3 hour drive for me. Would be any easy one to get too as well.

Wow, $300-400! Too bad you are not in So. California. I sometimes attend a Adult Ed. Photo School here. $200 per 10 week term for all the classes and time you want for one price and fee. We have one-off seminars by people like you are talking about too. Those are an added $60 per year.

There is a lot of good Photoshop instruction on the Web, especially YouTube. Do some Googling. I understand your concerns as well. Been there. Good luck.

It looks like you'd be getting two days with one instructor, and Bryan is sold out. The sessions run from 9:00 - 4:00 and cover one topic with one instructor. It will probably be a huge class with a huge screen for everyone to watch. I doubt if this will a Q&A type of thing. I've been to sessions that involved hundreds of people in an auditorium - waste of time and money.

Look at CreativeLive. They offer classes that run for one or two days for free, and you can buy them for a reasonable price, generally under $100.

Lynda.com offers a whole month of watching for just $25.

EDIT: Don't let the "Big Names" lure you in. One of the Big Name classes I saw advertised was being given by a student of the master.

I've taken several of the Creative Live Classes and I do enjoy them. I was just thinking that something hands on with someone.. anyone would be good.

I think this would be "eyes on." They're not going to have a small group of people, each with his own computer. It will be a large room full of people, with the speaker up front, and projections onto a large screen, although I could be mistaken.

I just did a Photography tour on Chicago with John Batdorff. I'm from Ellhart, IN. Anyway, there were people who, before this class only shot in Auto. You'll be fine, and you'll learn so much. I had a great time. Don't be shy, ask questions that is what the workshop is for.

I've done a few workshops and I insist that I learn something. I belong to a few subscription services like Kelbyone.com and Lynda.com. I use them almost daily. Don't ever be nervous or afraid to ask questions. Photographers, for the most part, always try to help a novice regardless of equipment. Photography is a "forever" learning thing in my opinion.

Nikon runs a series of Photography classes throughout the U.S. Beginner to advanced students and classes. It is not a class for Nikon owners only. Check it out on the Nikon USA website. Also, many municipalities have night schools that have photography classes, again from beginner to advanced. Some camera stores offer the same thing. Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions - chances are good that someone else has the same question but does not want to ask it.

Re EDIT: Students teaching courses, sounds like college even 55 years ago! Prof got paid for his "expertise" and teaching, but some grad. student did the grunt work for peanuts!

There are so many free training videos available on the internet I would not spend money or go out of my way to attend them. Most seminars are just infomercials in disguise.

I went to one at our local library and to my dismay it was worth exactly what it cost...nothing.

It looks interesting but if I were you I'd want to know what the "sold out" thing really means, and exactly what your registration fee does and does not cover especially since some sessions have prices affixed and some don't. I would assume that these are class-size activities that may not involve much 1:1 attention but moreso instruction/demonstration. I like this model of learning myself but some people don't, they really want that 1:1 time. Sounds kind of like any conference, you have sessions of your choice (if available) with a leader/instructor.

It's something I'd do if it were near me, as the price is fairly reasonable for what is offered. But if I wanted 1:1, I'd find a pro I admired that I could buy a day's mentoring with, that goes for around $500-$800 and they would be all yours.

I just finished the National Geographic course from Great Courses. It was 4 DVD's consisting of 24 lectures of 30 min each. It was very good and I am very satisfied with it. It cost $79.00 and i have the DVD's for reference any time i want.
