Dear Hogs,

I know this question has been addressed before, but I'm wondering which camera system (Nikon vs. Canon) is the best. I realize there is no easy answer but I thought I'd ask it anyway. When I posed it to a professional photographer and Canon user a few years ago, she said Nikon had the better camera system but Canon had the better lenses.

I'm definitely not a professional -but I'd say it depends upon what kind of photographer you are - recreational or professional. My first cameras were Canons which were great but I got tired of lugging around extra lenses so switched to a "bridge" camera. My first was a Nikon p510 which I loved. However, it did not shoot RAW photos. I was converted to the use of RAW by several professional photographers. So I recently bought a Canon SX 50 which is also a bridge camera and shoots RAW. I definitely like that ability but I've found very little difference between the 2 cameras otherwise. I've taken shots with both cameras of the same objects at the same time and found that the Nikon's presets often turned out better photos that I get after fiddling around with PS and my RAW photos from my Canon. Hopefully someone with more professional experience with both brands can give you an answer.

In MY NOT SO HUMBEL OPEINION there is not a camera system rtoday that you can not take great pictures with. What you need to do is pick a system and then make sure that it will do what you want it to. All of us need to think less about equipment and more about improving our photography skills. When you do come up with something you want to do and cannot do it with what you have it's time to look into what you need to do the job. - Dave

There is no "universal" best camera system (or anything else) without knowing the criteria that are important to you. And why limit it to Canikon?

You will get a lot of bragging and dissing and probably very little useful info that you couldn't get by reviewing the previous replies to the same question that appears about twice a month. But it does stir the pot and raise some rabble!

Most Nikon users will tell you Nikon, Most Canon users will tell you Canon, and many will tell you they are both great. They are all good answers. Since I am a Nikon user, Nikon's are the best.
:D

You can't generalize about which is the best. Some Canon cameras are better than some Nikon cameras and vice-versa. Same for their lenses and flashes.

It's irrelevant anyway since they upstage each other routinely and besides both make more stuff than you will ever want, need or can afford.

So buy the best you can afford of any brand and next year it will replaced by something better.

If you want bragging rights buy a Leica, its basically what they are best for.

The correct answer as of last week is "Sony."

I agree with the Sony, but get some extra batteries with it! I have always shot Nikon. If your question was 'what camera should Norman get?' it would have to be a Nikon. But I would suggest for you to get a Canon. A great camera! Or a Nikon! Another great camera! Or a Fuji! An excellent choice! Or a Sony! Awesome stuff! I guess what it boils down to is that all of the current top brands are great and each one has it's faithful followers. Find a camera you love, hold one, take some shots with it, then buy one! Photography is a great hobby/profession. Get a camera and start taking pictures :-D

I almost hate to respond to this question but here it goes. I don't think it matters to 99.99 percent of Nikon/Canon shooters. What matters mostly is how well a photographer manipulates his/her skill to make a proper exposure period.
