I'm just curious what most of you use when you grill outside. I've been using a propane grill for years, but the cost of propane - and nostalgia - has me inclined to go back to charcoal. One tank of propane would cost more than a season's worth of charcoal.

I use propane. I think the last time I filled my tanks it was $25 per tank. One tank can last me 2 seasons. That's grilling a couple of times a week for about 6 months.
I understand charcoal is a carcinogen, so I don't use it.

I have been a fan of Charcoal for years. I only use propane for home cooking and for my Turkey Fryer

Natural Gas. It's easy, clean, and inexpensive.

Propane when in a hurry and no guests. Like using a cell phone for quick snapshots. Charcoal for guests and to piss off environmental wackos. Much better flavor like using a real camera for photos.

OK Jerry you have opened a big controversy here.

For convenience there is no doubt that Propane wins hands down - my propane cost is far less than many because I buy it from the same distributor that I get my home heating propane from with a couple built in discounts in my contract the price is less than $2.50 a gallon.

Now for flavor and quality I go for good old fashioned charcoal - not briquets. I generally buy Mesquite but when I find a good hickory or apple I'll grab it.

Don't ask "Hank Hill"!

We use a mixture of Charcoal and Wood. I am not even sure the wood is a good idea as much of it is random waste pieces and who knows what it is or what is in it. I know to stay away from plywood and pressure (poison) treated wood of course. I mainly use the wood because often the lighting fluid (methanol and kerosine, or what ever) snuffs out too soon.

I keep thinking of having a BBQ hooked up to my home Natural Gas (Methane) line, but I hear you need a permit for the black iron pipes and there is some danger. Think is Methane is cheap in California. I use Propane for camping and yes we have that to in cans or tanks. We as stated above have plumbed gas to our home. But even in California people living in the mountains, deserts, and other wilderness areas have propane or (butane?) instead in large tanks.

Ever try using gasoline to start a BQQ? Don't, you'll get a huge orange fireball and likely a visit from the fire department and / or the police. I've had a fireball but missed the authorities luckily.
