Whole Canaan Valley: Dolly Sods Wilderness (right on the Appalachian escarpment), Canaan Valley State Park, Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge (See Seneca Rocks also nearby)
nice hiking/cross country ski trail from Canaan Resort to Blackwater Falls

Greenbank (National Radio Observatory, whole valley in radio silence!), Cass Scenic Railway

There are a couple of rafting trips down the New River out of Thermond, WVA. The scenic one (as compared to the White Water one) should provide some wonderful and colorful photo opportunities.

The airport at Charlie West is an engineering masterpiece. The top of a mountain was lopped off and turned into a mesa-type plateau. 1/2 mile from touchdown and the aircraft is 1200' above the terrain below. All of a sudden the terrain is about 50' below you and you are ready to land. The town's leaders named the place after Chuck Yeager, the first man to go supersonic.
