I've taken a zillion courses from BetterPhoto.com, and I've followed up with some of the instructors for more one-on-one feedback. It has really worked for me. There's a good community of photographers that populate the courses and the Masterpiece Membership group, basically an online camera club. Really works for me because I live in a rural area, and I just can't commute to the local college with any predictability. Their new "self study" programs are not as expensive as the "intranet" classes. But I really value the interactions with the instructors and other students during a course....so, I think it's worth stepping up to the classes.

there's 2 things you have to have to be a good photographer, LUCK and be at the rite place at the rite time.....
as far as schooling, i think you learn more by mistakes...after about 1000 bad pic's, you remember your settings, look up and see were the sun is, set your iso, and take off your lens cap....
and as long as you like your photo's that's all that really matters.....

Go to KenRockwell.Com If you go read and work with your camera on his articals I would say you will know more about photography than if you did the Yew York School. AFter you are in awhile you may not agree with him on everything. His views on RAW are not the same as many. A Pro Photographer is one that makes money at it. Amateur comes from the Latin word for love. Many amateur photographers are much better than pros. I hate it when poor work is called amateeur. It should be just called bad. Dave

Here's one site I used and gives you a flexible timeline to complete.

http://www.proudphotography.com/

You have your personal instructor who tweaks your photos and
gives you personal feedback.
There is a quiz on each of the 10 lessons.
I have appreciated the encouragement and the tips.

Back in January, I began my 1st semester at Academy of Art University (www.academyart.edu) They have very good on-line courses that are really challenging. I'm working on an Associates in Photography right now, but I'll probably take it further with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography. AAU has a really great staff and lots of technical support (which is important).

an alternate option to online class, I had to get this book for a class "photography" by London, Upton,Stone,Kobre, and Brill. Great for explaining a lot of the technical and give you ideas to practice, espeicaly for shutter priority and aperture priority which is one of the basics to master and then move forward from there.

I had my own photography business for a long time, I have owned medium and 35mm. cameras, I made a good income from my 35mm. I am just getting into the digital realm of photography and it is a totally new learning experience from negitive film. I have to learn all over again. I have taken classes from Nikon and I have given classes in photography, the ONLY way to learn is for you to take the picture and look at your own work, remember, form, texture, light, composition. take many photo's, look at your work, do you like it?? Would I pay you? I did Weddings, I hated Studio photography, I have done Commercial work, made money but my love was nature and marcro, did not make a dime on it but won awards. Some things just cannot be taught...remember it is not the camera, it is the person behind the camera that makes the picture...thats you...

I am currently taking the Professional Photography course through the New York Institute of Photography and I love it! I have learned a lot through the course. Not only do they go over basic photography skills, but they teach you business skills. They have photo assignments and they assign an adviser who will give you helpful critique of your photos. I called them once and they were very helpful. Yes, it is a lot, but you can pay in installments. And when you think about it, it is about as much as college course. They also have a trial period if you wanted to try it. I highly recommend it.

You might check out this site:

It has a lot of avenues for learning new things.

Nothing wrong with being a well-educated amateur.

Thank you Bob! I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. I am so eager to learn about photography....but can't ever get an honest answer or critique from people. I finally got some photos posted today and guess what lots of views, but no critiques! LOL!

I noticed that too, when I joined I put up some photos, 55 views, no critique or comments. Sorta discouraged me from putting up more...
I will go look at yours now :)
Also Bob thanks for the clarification on accreditation.
And thank you all for your school thoughts and recommendations!

Thanks.....sometimes I'm a bit leery re: schools who say that they're the best unless I know someone who has attended !!
