A walk, on a beautiful day recently, in the woods looking for birds I came upon an unexpected tree dweller.

I looked at that with a never ending "awwwwwwwwww....."
Such a priceless find! Excellent shot. I know I would have been shaking too much to produce anything worthy of keeping.

Looks like a fox to me.
I'm surprised it did not hear the OP approach.

Correct. It is a red fox. Caught him sleeping high in a tree. I also wear very thick soft foam on the bottom of my sneakers, my own design, which really reduces sound and I move very slowly. Thanks for the look.

That is actually a gray fox which tend to have a little red mixed in the coat. Red's typically do not climb tree's because they belong to the canine familly, gray's belong to the feline group and climbing tree's is quite normal. None the less it is a wonderful picture, I believe god put you at right place at the right time and the capture is wonderful.

That's interesting right there. Thanks for sharing, I never knew that.
And to the OP, that's a beautiful shot. The tree looks to me to have a bit of wear where he's laying, must be his favorite spot.
