I just received a brand new Olympus M-5 from B&H via the UPS truck- it was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. I charged the battery and then loaded the battery, loaded the formatted SD card and attached the lens. The camera fired up and then shut down. I re- sequenced things several times and still same results. I changed the lens, reformatted the SD card via the M-10 camera, changed the SD card and recharged the battery with same results. And then removed everything and did it all again and again. I don't have a spare battery to try. It will not stay connected long enough to set anything up. Help please.

How could you format the card if it doesn't stay on?

I have never seen this behavior in an Oly camera. If I were you I'd send it back and get another. Even if it suddenly quit this strange quirk, I'd be afraid it would start up again at the most inopportune time. Sounds like you can't even keep it awake long enough for a full reset.

I couldn't. So I deleted the contents of the card and formatted it in the Olympus M -10.

Yeah- unfortunately I agree. But I wanted to use it this weekend...
Try it without the formatted (by the M10) card in it.

What card would I use then? I have 2 SD cards formatted for Nikon, one card formatted for Sony, one card formatted for Olympus M-10. No brand new, unused cards around although guess I could go buy another one. Even a new card would need to be formatted for the M-5 right? I was hoping it would stay on long enough to format a card through the camera.
Ok I took the card out and turned the camera on but it doesn't stay on long enough to even give me an error message :( But thanks for the suggestion.
I think it's a send back- sigh.
It most likely needs to go back but why don't you ask on
www.m43.com?
Why don't you call Olympus (800) 622-6372. I would send it back. If you keep it more than 30 days then you have to deal with Olympus in Texas. I would send it back. They can send you a new one immediately then credit you when they receive the return.

TRY
while power is off, press and hold the the shutter button, then turn on the power, keep shutter release pressed for 10 sec's or so, see if that helps......

Not likely to do with the card.
The camera does not have enough power to stay on. Suspect the battery is defective or the contacts are dirty.
See if you can clean the battery contacts with a pencil eraser. Afterwards recharge the battery and try it again.
If it still does not work send it all back and get replacements.
Can you power the camera directly from a 'wall wart' without using the battery?
Can you test the battery to see if it is holding a charge?
What does B&H or Olympus say about your problem? They should KNOW rather than the speculation & WAG's you'll get here.
Good luck

Maybe it's a bad battery. Do you have a camera store near-by where you could get a new battery? Good luck, I hope you get it worked out before your trip.
