I see nothing wrong with using cloud storage as another form of back up, just not your only one.

Here's an interesting article about google photos, vs Flickr storage. Much depends on if you care that your images are compressed, the other side is that Google allows back up (compressed) of RAW files, where Flickr is just for jpeg

Frankly, once you back up to one service (I hear it's painfully slow), what is stopping you from signing up for the other as well? Then you can have 2 cloud back ups, as well as your hard drives.
