Great question,,,,,,,Ok, I do not like unions, but I was in one for thirty some years. Union wages are responsible for many companies jumping ship to China, etc. No manufacturing company has to accept a union, and one company I worked for refused any union; in fact if anyone even suggested a union or the establishment of one, they would have been terminated. That was then, who knows how the laws have changed. As far a i******s, they would in my opinion never become legal unless they went through the process of becoming a citizen, no amnesty ever. We have i*********n l*ws that have been twisted and this is wrong. It has been said though, from some of the large farmers in California, if they did not have the illegal pickers, then the crops would rot in the fields. Again we have prisoners rotting in their cells and I say give all of them one day off their sentences for one day in the fields. America has thousands of prisoners and quite frankly, I would rather work the fields than sit in a jail cell...Ok, it's complicated.
As far as wages,in factories, pay a decent wage, higher than welfare and see how many takers there are. but in essence, fixing America is simply common sense.
As far as conservative values verses democratic values, many people think America was founded on conservative values. I think there was a blend of both conservative and democratic values...Your reply was based on great thought and I applaud that.To answer your question of Chinese wages, no! we would not get away with that, as long as there was welfare.

The big problem I see with using prisoners is lack of motivation.
Reducing their sentence MIGHT work, but there would have to be performance standards.
If they don't meet the standard they go back to their cell. We don't want prisoners just standing around not doing much and getting the same benefit as those who do work. There will ALWAYS be those who will try to "game" the system.
This might work for enough prisoners to work all the jobs required.
