My experience with battery grips: I have and OEM grip on my film camera - no issues. Third party grip on my D5100 (no OEM grip available). Have contact issues - won't use it when the shoot is important. Seems to be better after complete disassembly to repair the tripod socket. re. The tripod threaded socket: When I mounted my flash bracket to the tripod socket on the grip, it pulled the socket out of the grip. There is only a small head on the socket heat bonded to the plastic. Just a FYI.

I like the weight for shooting, but I certainly wouldn't like hiking 10 miles with it, or carrying it around ALL day. Having the weight "in hand" any amount of time is also straining. It almost begs for some type of hand strap to relieve the strain if you have to keep it in hand any length of time. Everything is a trade off of something else, no question about that.

Check out the vest from Cotton Carrier. It will lighten the load. I have a Canon 60D with a battery grip and just recently bought the Cotton Carrier vest. I actually bought the Steady Shot support for long lenses and it was necessary to have the vest. I used the vest recently while at dog shows and it's great.

we use my wife's mirror-less camera on my 24-70 and 70-200 with a 1.4 extender, and also use canon 1d bodies with it. the camera always feels balanced in my hand, with several years of shooting collegiate sports and photojournalism I had never even considered balance. I asked others about it and they looked at me like I was weird. these are professional shooters.
Can someone explain this to me?

I ordered one of these from Amazon for my D800. There are good reviews on Amazon and dpreview. For the price, I'll take a chance, and since it's fulfilled by Amazon, a return will be easy.http://www.amazon.com/DSTE-MB-D12-Battery-Digital-Camera/dp/B00E93JG6S/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

I actually received 2 of these grips, the other one for my D810. I installed them on both bodies and the fit is excellent. All controls work properly and they seem to be very well made. I guess time will tell, but for less than $50 each, and a 2 yr. warranty, they are well worth it.

As I have slightly bigger hands I bought a Zeikos grip for my D5300. I like the increased size of the camera as well as the added weight. No regrets. No troubles.
