Does anyone know of some great places to photograph in and around the park..I will be in the north for a week, central for a week, and south for a week. Shenandoah NP..
If going to hike and you don't have one already, get a copy of Circuit Hikes in the Shenandoah National Park from the
www.patc.net or at the main entrance to the park. This pocket sized guide gives hikes and descriptions in all three districts of the park. It can be pretty hazy in the summertime so your wide angle horizon shots may not work except around first light and dusk when maybe you can catch mist rising from the trees. I've always seen more wildlife in the southern district although we did once encounter a black bear on a trail in the northern district. A very popular hike is Old Rag in the central district that is east of the main park. Popular as in be there at first light to get a parking spot. The top is nearly bald so you can see and shoot without trees blocking your view. Bring tick repellent for every walk in the woods and apply liberally.
If you're up for an all-day very hard hike, the best trail in the park is Austin Mountain - Furnace Mountain in the southern district. It's not as hard in the fall when the leaves have changed or even dropped in cool temps. Even in the heat of summer with sweat streaming (bring plenty of water and snacks), it's a wonderful hike with lots of varied terrain.
Thank you for all the info. ..I will get the map online and do studying before I get there. ..I am used to the heat being from south fla. But I will be prepared. ..PS.. do you know of any good RV. parks..
Make sure you visit Luray Caverns during your Midweek.
Black Falls just North of the Meadow is a good hike. As the locals tell you, it's .7 miles down and 7 miles back up. Lots of places to stop and sit though. We're leaving for that area in two weeks. Been going there for many years now.
