At its I/O 2015 developer conference today, Google launched Google Photos for Android, iOS, and the Web. The new service is completely separate from Google+, something Google users have been requesting for eons.

Google is declaring that Google Photos lets you backup and store “unlimited, high-quality photos and videos, for free.” All of Google’s various photo offerings had storage limits based on your Google account (Gmail, Google Drive, and Google+).

That said, Google Photos maintains the original resolution up to 16MP for photos and 1080p high-definition for videos. The app also stores compressed versions of the photos and videos in print-quality resolution.

I thought this might be of interest to a few people on here. It seems to work already if you have a google account, I went to the google photo's page and saw I already had images on there from my cell phone, just checked there are images going back to 2009... I guess some are from picasa web albums.

Not for everybody, especially professionals but it makes it very easy to find and share images with friends and family.

what do you guys think?

if you go to http://www.photos.google.com you may find you are using it already.

Knowing how Google can work, I'd like to read the really fine print with regard to what Google can do with those photos once they "have them".

I bought a Chromebook a couple of weeks ago (Samsung brand) and the app is already installed and linked. Nice!

The thing that surprised me was I have lots of photo's there, ok its up to me if i want to share them with anybody else the images are not by default public, I hope! You might be surprised to find you have many photo's backed up and there in chronological order.

The question that people should be asking is what photo's do google have of yours already?

I'd definitely be surprised, since I don't post anything to Google. If they do have any, that is akin to stealing.

Quick question - can anyone see the pictures, or just the original poster?

Simple, they have the all. And I'm pretty confident without reading all the legalese stuff in print so small a microscope is needed....that they can sell and/or use them in anyway that promotes their business or shareholders. And your consent was given by nothing more then searching for them on the 'net.

This gal thinks that that is exactly the reason she won't be using this service.
Did you give them permission to take your photos and put them on their photo page?
My philosophy is that they are my photos, I will decide where they are stored and when they are stored there.

If I were you, I would very carefully read the fine print - all of it - to see what rights Google Photos has taken for itself where it concerns your photos!

well i can only speak for myself that I signed up for picasa web albums unfortunately google decided everyone should be using google plus and kept redirecting to google plus which most people found annoying. So now they have this new service google photo's which is almost back to the picasa web albums. Now I have auto backup on my phone so any pictures are backed up to my dropbox that is googles dropbox not the well known service of the same name (very confusing ) then there is my google drive / gdrive which stores my documents in the cloud and anything else I put in there. Seems these different sources have been used to populate google photo's for me.

Anyway it looks like if you have uploaded photo's through any of googles services then they will appear in google photo's not necessarily a bad thing epecially if you use a number of devices on your google accounts.

I think there is a limit on image size.

well google puts a limit of 15GB as your free allowance for all its services.

but essentially for google photo's they offer unlimited storage for images 16Mb and under which doesn't count towards your 15GB free, for images larger than that they count against your 15GB free storage, of course if you were to set up a second google account you would have another 15GB..

Google can skirt around the law, by providing a 'free' service. Would be a different story, if you were paying them.

I am backing up my photos to Google Photo even as I type this. The process is very slow, maybe my computer. I have been doing this for 48 hours and its only backed up 2,500 out of 24,000 files. We'll see how long it takes.

I have only a broadband Internet connection uploading at a painfully-slow 1.5 or so mbps. When attempting to use the new Google service, the process slowed my computer to it being unusable... like the old dial-up days...or worse.
If you have a fiber optic or ultra high speed Internet, you might like Google...as for me, no thanks.
