these are a couple of pictures of the old state hospital in Bartonville, Illinois. they say that it is haunted. they are trying to preserve this piece of history from the wrecking ball, but I don't know, it needs a lot of work.

I hope they can preserve it, could even repurpose it to help make it worth the $ and effort. Offices, retirement living, affordable housing etc.
Brick and stone buildings that have good framing are really not that hard to refurbish. Takes a lot of labor and $$$ but the basic structure is uaually pretty sound and durable. The interiors, divider walls etc, a lot of cosmetic stuff falls apart and makes it look worse than it is.
LA Unified had a school that developed cracks in the bricks after an earth quake. They rushed to build a new school on the playground, moved everything to the new building and then started to demolish the old school and turn it into a replacement playground. Turns out they should have pulled and studied the old WPA blue prints first. Under a decorative brick facing outside and plaster facing inside it was thick rebarred concrete built like a bunker to last many decades, if not centuries. All they really needed to do was repair or replace the brick facing. The tear down, done with cutting torches and concrete saws etc. (couldn't use explosives because it was in a residential area) was so labor intensive that it took twice as long as building the new school and cost almost twice as much.
hi bob, they have tours Friday and Saturday nights. my son in law loves the para normal and I think he would love to go on the evening tour. this piece of history sits on top of a hill. there were many other buildings but non as old as this or as creepy.

hi Robert, I know what you mean about the good framing. they don't make buildings like that any more. it needs a new roof. thanks for looking. deb
