I am thinking about buying a battery grip for my
D5100. What do you recommed.

Question
Why do you want a grip?
Should you decide to get one, get a Nikon one. Don't chance a second party grip!
Aftermarket grips are a real crapshoot! You might get a good one, or you might get three before you get a good one. How much are you willing to spend buying junk before you lay down the money for a real grip? Just bite the bullet and get the Nikon, it WILL work, and it has the Nikon warranty!
I have a second party grip for my D300 and it works well. Haven't had a bit of problem with it. Mine is Zeikos.
Fair statements regarding possible quality issues, however.

Nikon doesn't make one for the D5100 for some reason.

I was not aware of that. I wonder why not?
I have a Zeikos, too. No problems.
I purchased a Nikon grip for my D300s 2 months ago. The quality and build is exactly like the camera body Quality and tough. I increases both battery capasity and FPS rate.
Most of all, it provides an extra set of controls when shooting in the portrait mode. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
I'd also stick with Nikon... I've read many reviews on aftermarket brands and they all have quality issues.
I bought the Nikon grip for my D700. I bought it used on ebay for around 185.00 boxed with papers. There's a youtube video showing a guy cutting a 2nd party grip off his camera with a hacksaw! This cured me from trying to save a few bucks on a cheap one. Peace of mind is priceless.
Nikon grips are way over priced,i have one for my d7000,d200,d300 all none are nikon and cost a quarter of the price never had a problem
Nikon told me they don't make a grip for the 5000 series because of the flip down LCD panel. The grip would somehow interfere with the LCD. If I had known that when I bought my D5000 I would not have bought. The whole explanation is crap however because obviously somebody (aftermarket) has been able to make fully functional grips that work fine. As far as Im concerned its just an excuse from Nikon for not following up on a product. They rushed the D5000 series out because video was the new craze. They let their customers down as usual...
This about sums it up! Now your question should be "which brand of 3rd party grip is the best?"

Nikon does not make a grip for the d5100. aftermarket grips are not that great. unless you need the extra length that two batteries will give you, you would be better off just carrying an extra battery and changing it when needed.
