I have just installed a pile of programs for someone on their new PC running Windows 8.1. First time I had touched a PC with Windows 8 installed. So my question is why all the negativity about the operating system?
Works fine looks good and easy to get around to where you want to be.
Listening to folks here and other sites I was expecting a nightmare of a task but found it just fine.
Visually it makes Windows 7 look incredibly old fashioned. I was installing programs "borrowed" from the net so had to delve into Program files to copy and paste items and change folder names etc. No problems found.
Cant see what is wrong with it at all.

I don't like the big square icons and the big blue screen. It's like something you'd use for a kindergarten class. I got a $10 app to give me back the Start button, but I sometimes get that blue icon screen, and I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to Task Manager to do what I want.
Jerry, after your computer boots up press the windows key and the letter "d" at the same time and you can see the old style home page.

I've renamed it System RS (ReStart). I can read my email, for example, then if I try to open a folder or file it freezes. I use desktop mode and navigation is no problem, but the constant locking up when changing from one task to another makes it useless. The machine will sit until Windows 10 is released (or perhaps I could upgrade to DOS or 3.1!).
I've had it for about a year and have not had any problems. Took about 3-4 days to find my way around, but now I like it.
:-D
me too!
once I found I can work from the desktop, I was golden :-)
I haven't had any issues with 8.1.
knock on wood...

After getting used to 8.1 I have no problem with it. In fact when I use the wife's desktop with Windows 7 is when I have problems anymore.

I have been running Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1 for two years on a HP laptop. It is my main computer. I have experienced very few problems. Mine boots up to the desktop that looks like other versions of Windows. I have no qualms about 8.1 and wonder, as you do, about all the bally-hoo others around the Hog are spewing. Have a GREAT DAY!

It's not a lot different than Win 7. The Start MENU has been replaced with a Start PAGE. Other than that, pretty much the same.
I've been using Windows 8 for about two years that came with my Dell. Runs great, took a little while to get used to it. I did have to reinstall it one time, but that was my fault! ;-)

Neither can I. I switched from Windows XP to 8.0 about a year and a half ago and have no issues at all. Actually, I like the setup and have found no need at all to download a template or overlay to try to force it to mount like the old operating systems.
The first editon of Windows 8 was admittedly buggy, but current versions are fine.

If the change is really better, no problem. I am an "old person" by many people's standards... I have been working with computers since writing machine-language programs for a PDP-8 in 1970 (a whopping 64K of memory! ) I have all sorts of updated software, hardware, and other non-photo "toys". But I don't recall ever really feeling that I needed a new improved operating system. Windows 7 seems far more intuitive than Windows 8.1 - folders and files are very easy to navigate. Why "fix" something that isn't broken?

I find your post extremely offensive!!!
I have been using Windows 8 since day 1 and now I am using Windows 10.
I was born in 1937, work my age out if you able to, and I have been able to cope with these operating system without any difficulty.
