If you are in the market for a new tripod or head, the $2.99 you pay for this short book should save you more than it costs. Frances or Roger or both have covered tripods for Shutterbug magazine for many years, as well as currently owning 15 or 20 of them. We tell you what to look out for; what to avoid;
how to buy second-hand; and where you can and can't save money.
Read a summary and see some of the pictures." (This last bit is a free 'taster'.)

He fixed it a few posts up. Just leave the comma off the end.

Newer is not better. My favorite tripod is a very old Benbo. Whatever and whoever you buy from, they should be willing to mount a camera similar to yours and demonstrate smooth controls.
I recently bought a Feisol tripod and a photoclam pro gold ballhead from reallybigcameras.com. the quality is fantastic. The ballhead is smooth and holds rock solid. I've heard too many stories of people buying "cheap" tripods and then upgrading shortly thereafter. The Feisol comes with a nice case with a shoulder strap too. I couldn't be more happy with my purchase.
The best tripods for the money are Velbon, and have the leg braces, and if you look on Ebay you will see hundreds of used ones for 20.00-40.00 dollars. Get the one with the tilting head and the tightener. If you are going more techy, then the Manfrotto with a real good ball head is your next choice...Again....Go Ebay and save your money!
First go on line to Youtube and see what the photo geeks have to say about tripods! I swear by Youtube! I purchased my last camera, the Pentax K-7 by watching what it does and is capable of doing! The one video that sold me was the one where the guy was standing in his shower taking pictures with the water resistant 18-55 lens...The shower was going full stream! I live in Washington and will eventually find a nice sunny rainbow day to let the camera shine!
Unfortunately I am now in Utah watching the grandsons and will be home on Sunday, where I can attach some photos to my next reply!
Enjoy the Velbon/Manfrotto search!
