What is the ruling on selling pictures later on that were originally taken as news coverage?
If YOU own them, sell away.

Depends on if the original publisher has the rights to the photos. Most news publications own the rights if they are published. Check on the status with the original publisher's agreement for using your photos.
All this is correct. I did a career in television news / sports photography. Copyright and ownership are big deals in that business. So big in fact that if anyone outside the company wanted to see any of our footage for any reason other than watching it on the air it took a subpoena to get it from us... and then a supervisor from our station had to be present when the footage was viewed and it was made clear from the very beginning who owned the copyright.
Your question isn't really clear about where these pictures came from or who owns the rights to them but... under US copyright law the material is copyrighted the instant it is created. If you own this property, yes sell it if you can. If not I'd advise you don't... you could end up in court.
Good Luck

Depends on if your page is in a publication owned by someone else. If so, they might have jurisdiction over them.

I think what DK is getting at is if you shot these while in the employ of a publication or web site then the photos do actually belong to them. If you shot them on your own, free lancing and not employed by another then the photos belong to you.
I don't know if you've heard the story about Post It notes?
They were developed by a guy who, at the time, was in his office at IBM, under they're employ. He received nothing for his invention.
It works the same way here. Good Luck
