If you have a DSLR body that also shoots video, in my case a D7100, does the shutter count on the camera increase when you shoot video?

Does it increase at the speed the video was taken? That is 24 FPS or such.

Mirror flips up - no shutter action.

My understanding is that there is one shutter actuation when you start to record the video whether the video is 2 minutes or 20 minutes long. The problem with buying a used camera is that a low shutter count doesn't fully tell the usage story; there could be 500 hours of video recorded. I wonder if the sensor getting warm/hot during video recording mode effects the life of the sensor?

Mirror flips PLUS shutter opens. One video equals one shutter count.

The shutter actuation counts once for video. According to Nikon the effect on the sensor and the electronics is not significant; as they point out a lot of people make long exposures of greater duration than many video clips that are made.

The vulnerable piece of the camera is the shutter; the sensor is basically solid state and will go on beyond the life of several shutters provided nothing goes wrong with the electronics that operate it.

Ooooh! You got me! :D

I wish you'd hire more help in your store. You're not posting enough any more.

Yeah, not that much spare time since the move. Looking for help right now but finding someone with a bit of knowledge in a city that has not had a camera store in over 10 years is proving difficult.

For anyone who may not know, my worst camera department experiences have been in Best Buy, where I've been told that any photo paper will work in my printer (it won't) and another salesguy thought a ball head is a trailer hitch.

How did we go from Shutter counts to Camera stores and then to trailer hitches. Talk about hijacking a thread............ Hmmmmm

It's like friends chatting at the back of the room after the question has been answered and the meeting's over.

How did we go from.... to.....?

Well, Jerry said, "I wish you'd hire more help in your store. You're not posting enough any more."

Then MT said, "Looking for help right now but finding someone with a bit of knowledge in a city that has not had a camera store in over 10 years is proving difficult."

And then I said....... oh, never mind. :-D

That's like in Hogville. :XD:
