Changing camera bodies but not the card

I shot some pictures with my D90 and then took the card out of the body and put it in my D750 and finished shooting. The D90 would not read the photos taken with the D750. Any solutions?
Not of problem for the computer, I am guessing, because I gave the card to my son and have not discussed it with him yet.

Yeah, that's the way it is. I've experimented, and you can use an SD card in several brands and models of cameras. Fortunately, the camera makes a separate folder for each camera, naming the camera in the process. As you've seen, a D90 cannot display pictures taken by anything else. No problem for a computer, though. A few lines of code would probably let any camera read any card.

There is no "solution" because the raw files from each camera are different - meaning the computer in the camera that creates the JPEGs you chimp on the fly cannot interpret raw files from other camera models.

I figured out a while ago that when I used a card in different cameras, I needed to download the card and then format it in the next camera.

Interesting.. I guess camera formats are not equal, so I had to try this.

I formatted a card in a D800 and shot a pic, so the card is labelled D800. Then moved the card to a D750, D7100 and D3100. On each new camera I got the "No Images" messages but all were successfully recorded with a new subdirectory created on the card for each camera.

The only problem I could see is when transferring to the computer.

Importing with Nikon Transfer 2, all images were successfully transferred in a single directory.

Viewing Pix w/ Photo Gallery the D3100 images were not included.

Organize and Edit with PSE Elements 12, the D750 images did not show up. (That format is not supported in Elements 12 but is in Elements 13).

Viewing with Windows Explorer, all were shown, each in its own subdirectory which could only be viewed one subdirectory at a time.

As a minimum I would recommend viewing in Windows Explorer to verify that everything is there.

Wish I'd known that a few weeks ago. I shot 280 pix with 2 cameras and 3 cards. I suppose you could copy all of them into a single directory, then sort by date and time, but I haven't tried that yet.

Another question just occurred to me. If I make a CD will there be any future problems or are all the same? My guess is they will be the same.

Thanks I did not think about the formatting. Seems logical and does not seem much of a problem unless you are giving the one card to someone else.

I used a card formatted in one camera and used it in another camera(same brand). The camera functioned just fine. I previewed the shots on the LCD and everything.
When I went to download, the card corrupted and I lost 1000 shots. I was never able to recover them even with rescue software.
Now I have cards dedicated to each camera and clearly marked and formatted in those cameras only. I would swap them in an emergency but only as a last resort.
Maybe it was just coincidental but some of my gigs are paid.
That camera also has two slots and I was using just one. Won't do that again either if it's paid and I have two slots!!
Six months ago I was a happy-go-lucky card user and have said so here and had never lost a pic. I guess it only has to happen once. I was lucky it was not a wedding!!!

That's why one should always format the card for each camera!

I used a card formatted in one camera and used it ... (show quote)

I think you were just unlucky that day. The SD/SDHC/SDXC card format is standard. If you think you have a bad card, you might want to try this formatter: http://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
