Has any photographer said something that you found particularly useful in your image making? My favorite comes from Edward Weston:
"There is nothing photogenic more than 500 feet from your car."
The value varies according to the source, but his heart was in the right place!
If that were the case, I would sell all my gear and use a P&S
A good photo is one you hang on your wall and if you still like it in 6 months, it is a good photo !
Ah, you must take into account that Weston was suffering from a terrible illness for the last several years of his life. Even getting into a car caused him terrible problems.
Beyond that, he always managed to find the most simple of subjects to photograph, things that most would overlook, and the images were for the most part stunning.

But his mind was off. That's about as close-minded and dopey a statement as I can imagine.
one of mine is: "no matter what speed the film, Spirit always stands still for the photographer It has chosen." Minor White
"Above all, look at the things around you, the immediate world around you. If you are alive, it will mean something to you, and if you care enough about photography, and if you know how to use it, you will want to photograph that meaning."

You must remember that some photographers have used one lens exclusively. In particular, rangefinder camera shooters will often limit themselves to one lens, usually a 28, 35 or 50. The "if it doesn't fill the frame of my 35mm lens, I don't want to shoot it" mindset has been used by many great photographers. I never heard of HCB using anything but a short lens.
My favorite "Don't forget to take the lens cap off" This simple quote has served me well.

You can't depend on your eyes if your imagination is out of focus. Mark Twain
Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter.

Remember, Edward was probably carrying an 8x10 with tripod and film holders. Once my 4x5 and I leave the car, objects of interest need to be fairly close. Though I have to admit to carrying all that down a steep grade of a mile or so to get to the bottom of Tonto Natural Bridge a few times.
We dont make a photograph with just a camera. We bring to the act of photography all the books we have read, the movies we have seen, the music we have heard and the people we have loved.
