I have a daughter in VT. The job market depends on where you are going and what kind of employment you are looking for. Obviously the job prospects are better near the big cities, Burlington for example. The smaller towns and villages are not good employment prospects. Suggest you check some of the VT papers and look at the classifieds. Would not recommend moving until you have a job. Good luck.

VT has a lot of unemployment despite what the state government publishes for unemployment rates. The state is loaded with people who are unemployed, working under the table, on welfare of one type of another and the state is generally very unfriendly to big businesses that would pay decent wages and benefits. The real estate taxes are extremely high for what you get out of them as the school system here eats up a large portion of the taxes. State income taxes are high and just about everything that you can think of carries the sales tax of 6%, and gas prices are higher because of the taxes VT imposes on gas and diesel. There are more unpaved roads in VT than paved ones and all wheel or 4 wheel drive is just about a given if you travel much in the state, especially in the winter. There are 5 seasons in Vermont, short summer, short fall, looonnggg winter, Mud Season (hence the 4 wheel drive) and short spring.
VT also has a very big drug problem, so if you have children, this is not where you want to be. People are leaving VT because of the high taxes and low paying jobs situation. Vermonters whose families have lived here for 5 generations are moving out of the state as they cannot afford to retire in their own state. The average telephone bill in VT carries $17 in misc. taxes, every single month, and the legislature is proposing an 11% tax on cable and satellite TV. There is already a 5% tax on these services. Food prices are very high compared to NH or MA. Until Vermont changes its present legislature which is rapacious in its zeal to tax everything possible, and has thrown away tax payer dollars by the millions on their failed healthcare system, Vermont is not a place I would advise moving to. It is beautiful, no doubt about it, but affording to live here is another story entirely. At some point Vermont will become a place where only wealthy people can live and the jobs will be of a service nature supported by the wealthy people who need services and not production. Many of the larger employers have moved out of state because of the high taxes, high elec expenses, and the Gordian knot of regulations imposed on them. The ones that stay generally have low paying, non-technical jobs to fill.

Sounds like BC, except they can't find skilled tradesmen (they don't look very hard) so they bring off shore workers that will work for $20/hr when a red seal tradesmen is $35+/ hour sits at home,idel, And Cristy Clark (premiere) says she is creating jobs for BCer's
