If you have it, use it. If you don't, use your brain. Either method can get good results.
However, turning yourself into a pack mule does have drawbacks and should be limited. As in plan ahead and take what you need for that job.

I'll bet that Michelangelo had more then one paint brush. Get what you need to do a job, any job, properly.

I've never been in the position of having too many lenses, but I would be seriously worried about just where that tripod is positioned :-)

Yeah, but the plates are cheaper on the 550.
