I converted the file that was causing problems for many from JP2 to JPEG, after the purgatory of finals week was over. I hope this works: I would appreciate some more feedback. The shot was taken in Beartooth Pass, at the western summit. I used a 55 - 300 Nikkor zoom on my then brand new D3100.

Nice shot. I am hoping to see some of these guys in July when I am in Colorado.

Nice!

Love Beartooth pass. Lived in IF 30 years. Now in the banana belt (near Boise). Fished with some IF friends last week. A great time (and fish fry) was had by all at the annual Crane Falls Crappie outing.

Nice Malmute! We still miss our Tasha who passed over 20 years ago. Great dog for IF but too hot here for them.

Love your photo. My hubby and I will be in Gardiner/Yellowstone next week. How far to this end of the Beartooth? I would love to see mountain goat and sheep. Thanks

It would be a nice day drive from Gardiner through the park to the top of the pass and back. There isn't much on the other side for quite a ways. It a long ways around back to Bozeman.

Thank you MtnMn. Are there are places to see mountain goat and sheep?

Hello MtnMan:

The beautiful Malemute was my girl Kiana. I adopted her when she was 2 and had eight wonderful years with her. Cancer took her in 2013 and there is still a hole in my heart. I adopted a big male Malemute, Yukon, and while he is loving and a fine boy, he can never replace Kiana. Your Tasha must have been a lot like Kiana.

As I remember, it is about 65 miles from Gardiner to Cook, City, MT and another 30 miles or so from Cook city to Beartooth Pass. Going farther east on US 212 requires a lotos time getting to Red Lodge as the highway is narrow, steep and filled with switchbacks. The east summit has a fine view of Gardner Lake and the Absarokas, but it is along way to anywhere. IF you an, by all means explore the area. Beartooth Lake and Beartooth Butte are wonderful.

As you leave the park through the Notheast entrance I have seen goats on the cliffs to the north each time through. You have to look closely and they usually are a long way up.

The road on the west side of Mt. Washburn in the park often shows sheep.

We now go to Hells Canyon for goats and sheep. So far there have always been goats across the river just below Hells Canyon dam.

(PS: off to Yellowstone next week for our annual fix. Amazing how the campgrounds now fill up for the whole summer. We won't go then anyway due to crowds. An idiot got gored by a Buff last week.)

Yes. She also lived to be 10. Although not the brightest dog we've lived with (GSDs are) she was the sweetest. She never learned to leave porcupines alone, poor thing. She'd lay there while I fixed her up with a pair of pliers after an encounter.

Thanks for the info. The news said a 16 year old girl was 3-6 feet away from the bison, turned her back on it so someone could take a pix and was gored...we will also be in the park next week then plan to drive down to Jackson via Idaho side (scenic byway) for a few days. Any viewing tips you can provide are greatly appreciated!

Kiana was a very smart girl. She was incredibly well mannered, loved people and was a great travel companion. I carried pliers to crush the ice balls she'd get between her toes on long winter walks. Somewhere inside her was a canine philosopher - she would look long and thoughtfully at a vista and I wondered shat she was thinking.

If you wish to drive down from Yellowstone to Idaho Falls, in Idaho, here is the best route. From West Yellowstone, take US 20 south to a point about 30 miles south of Island Park. There will be a sign on your left for Mesa Falls Scenic Byway. Take it south to Mesa Falls, a pair of nice waterfalls in a fine setting: not nearly as high as Yellowstone Falls, but impressive. Where the Byway joins ID 47, turn right and go to Ashton and turn south on ID 32 - it will be marked Teton Scenic Byway. It is a beautiful drive through rolling hills with the Tetons to the southeast and then east and the Bighole Mtns. on your right. At Victor (Grand Teton Brewery brews fine beer in Victor), turn right on ID 31. Stay on 31 until Swan Valley and then turn right on to US 26 and follow it to Idaho Falls.
