We will be traveling to the Palouse and the coast of Oregon for a glorious photo trip of 16 days this summer. My photo friend and I will be flying in and out of Spokane renting a car and driving from place to place stopping for a few days in Colfax, Mitchell Washington (painted hills) and then on to Banden Oregon where we will drive up the coast stopping at various towns for a few days at a time. Aside from checking out the many places to photograph that we have checked out from the internet, does anyone have any hidden wonders to see? Also, we will be flying home from Spokane at the end of our trip so we can use help in finding the most picturesque route from seaside Oregon back to Spokane. Thanks.

Hello
There are many things on the Oregon side of the Columbian river to see and take pictures of also on the coast lighthouses and spectacular beaches 16 days may not be enough time to do all things. Have a wonderful trip just the same.
Thanks for your feedback. We know 16 days is not so much but it is all we have so we will make the best of it.

If you can find a Mile-By-Mile Guide of Hwy 101 published by Oregon Coast Magazine (oregoncoastmagazine.com) it is an excellent resource. The Oregon Coast is famous for its lighthouses, seastacks and bridges. Since you are starting at Bandon be sure to swing by Cape Arago west of Coos Bay (Sunset Beach, Shore Acres and Cape Arago are some of the parks in a 10 mile stretch of coast past Charleston, one of the most beautiful sections of the Oregon coast.
DWU2
Loc: Phoenix Arizona area
Haystack Rock at Canon Beach for sure.
thanks for the tips. I will go on line to see if I can find the mile by mile.
we will go to Haystack for sure and be there at sunset.

Will be a wonderful trip! I did something similar two years ago. I bought a little guide to photographing the Oregon coast by Dave Middleton (on Amazon) and it helped a lot. For the Palouse, this free guide from photographer/workshop instructor Jack Graham was very helpful.
https://jackgrahamphoto.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/the-palouse-the-complete-guide.pdfBoth places are impossible NOT to love. There's photo ops around every bend, just grabbing at you. Get off the paved roads in the Palouse and just wander. Don't miss the view from Steptoe Butte. In Oregon, wander a bit from the coast to get classic spots like Crater Lake if possible.
As far as routes, some versions might take you close enough to swing through Mt Rainier NP, another beautiful venue.
I've lived in the territory you plan to visit for several decades. The part of your trip to minimize is anything on I-5. Three routes have photographic potential.
The shortest includes a section of the avoidable I-5 through Eugene and Salem.
Two longer routes include a section of Eastern Oregon that is vastly different from Western Oregon and the Coast. The northern route includes a trip through Astoria and across the Washington Cascades near Mount St. Hellens. It could be adjusted a little to include getting close to Mt Rainier and driving over the amazing Cayuse Pass.

Some locations not on the coast you may want to visit, the Columbia River Gorge, there are several easily accessible waterfalls; Multnomah Falls, Latourelle Falls, and Horsetail Falls to name a few. Silverfalls State Park near Silverton is a special place with 10 waterfalls in the park; South Falls, North Falls and Upper North Falls are easy to access. Enjoy your trip!!
Bring the rain gear! I'm going to Yellowstone next week with rain every day!

All though rain is possible anytime of year on the Oregon coast the odds are really in your favor for staying dry that time of year. A light windbreaker that can repel rain or most likely a mist should do it.

Painted Hills is in OR.
If you go that far south Oregon Caves are cool and Crater Lake not to be missed. If more northerly Mt. St. Helens And Mt. Rainier very photogenic.
