Does any one have experience to compare the Nikon 200mm/F4 micro lens to the combined Nikon 105m micro + TC III 2.0? Thanks for the help in advance!

A 2X extender causes a 25% loss of sharpness, regardless of what lens it is used with, for openers.

I used both these lenses and sold the Nikon 200mm f4 lens. The Nikon 200mm does not have image stabilization and is heavy, I would get 2 out of 10 shots in focus with this lens. The person I sold the lens to is stronger than me and likes the lens he gets 6 out of 10 in focus and is able to steady himself. We both shoot moving subjects mainly insects so putting it on a tripod is out of the question. Instead of the Nikon 200mm I purchased the Sigma 180mm macro and am quite pleased with it, the Sigma 180 has OS and works well in my hands with 7 out of 10 shots being in crisp focus. I still have the Nikon 105mm and it works well with a TC 1.4 but not with a TC 2.0.

The old Nikon 200mm F4? A very very good macro lens, much under rated by people who ignore it in favour of the 105.

The 105 will not autofocus with the teleconverter attached. You will loose 2 stops. You will loose image quality. This is not really an option.

Thanks! I have 105mm and TC III 2.0. The autofocus does not work or VERY sloooow. I read reviews of Nikon 200mm/F4 micro. The autofocus of this lens is not fast. What I really want is a fast autofocus lens that I can use to take photos of butterflies or flying insects (such as bees around flowers). I used Nikkon 70-200mm with Nikon D4S (fast fps) before. But I would need to crop a lot to get what I need. The pixes of Nikon D4S is not much (16mb). I also have Nikon D800. It is good for crop but the FPS is not fast and autofocus is not as good as D4S. So I have dilemma here. I think that the fast long micro lens would be good. That is what I am seaching/lookig for. quote=DaveHam]The old Nikon 200mm F4? I've tried the TC20E III and returned it. The loss of IQ was apparent plus it slowed the auto focus with a 2 stop light loss.

Suspect it would be no contest in favor of the 200mm f/4.

The TC2 lll is far and away the best 2x tc on the market for Nikon today; very usable with the 2.8 and 4 primes and even in good light with the F4 200/400. Just not with the 105 for macro.

Yes, it works very well with Nikon 70-200mm/F2.8 VRII. Thanks!
