I used to work for USDA Veterinary Services. Australia's immigration requirements for animals have historically been some of the toughest on the planet. What happened to their customs service when Depp arrived. Didn't he have to clear customs & declare what he brought with him? Sounds like their Agriculture minister needs to quit barking up the wrong tree & determine where the problem really lies.

Yup, I agree. The inspectors screwed up. Maybe they were star struck.

This has been much covered by the media over here. Depp & the dogs arrived in his private plane & it has not been confirmed whether or not it landed at an international airport. If it was not an international airport, 'walking in' with the dogs would have been relatively easy--JMO. :-) :-)

I don't know about Australia but, when you fly into the U. S., you must land at an international airport to clear customs before flying on to your destination.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

It's the same here, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen (illegals do it). However, I couldn't imagine a celeb doing it. I suspect that someone screwed up. The latest disclosure on the news this morning is that he may not have obtained the correct permits to take the dogs out of the US, which will jeopardize his chances of taking them back into the US.

Agreed. I think this is a case of the Agriculture ministry/Customs trying to cover up their major error when they arrived. If they departed from a private airport here, Depp & the aircrew should have known they needed to clear customs. As for coming into the U. S., they will only need a health certificate signed by an accredited veterinarian since Australia is recognized as being rabies free.

I guess that they will sort it out. :-D

What total bullshit. Do they really think Johnny Depp is flying around the globe with diseased dogs. I will say that rules are rules but give me a break. If Mr. Depp will send me round trip airfare and a little spending money I'll go down and get the pups.

I'm sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with the dogs, but why should an exception be made just because he is a celebrity. Depp does a lot of traveling with his career. Surely at least one of his minders/advisors should have known that you can't just take dogs into another country without making prior arrangements (permits etc). I think one finger points at Depp & co for their ignorance. The other finger points at slack Aussie staff for their incompetence in not detecting the dogs on arrival. Their presence in Australia was first noticed when they were seen on the Gold Coast, 600 miles away.

Another mole hill turned into a mountain, lol.

I agree. Quarantines on animals are there for a reason. The same with any animal. It's required here just transporting horses between states. My comment was more directed towards the thought of putting the dogs down. Completely ridiculous. Should he get a pass because he's rich and famous. Hell no. But what's done is done. Hell a million dollar fine wouldn't hurt Johnny's wallet. I think it would be a great idea and contribute it to the animal shelters in AU. Introducing plants and animals into an environment where they are foreign has proven to be a disaster. Animals with no natural predators will dominate. As far as plants, Kudzu was brought into this country to help slow erosion. It went crazy killing trees and choking out domestic plants and crops. Same with different types of fish brought in either by accident or on purpose.

I would say that there is fault on both sides. I doubt if they will put the dogs down. Depp will fly them out. Hope the Aussies fine him for either his stupidity or arrogance.
