I am entering this picture (cropped/enhanced version) in a gallery and I need to know the type of bird.

Does anybody have an idea.

Most likely an immature sharp-shinned hawk. But other 1st year hawks look similar.

It appears to be an immature Cooper's Hawk. Very similar to the Sharp shinned Hawk mentioned above. Maybe our expert birders will chime in and make a positive ID?

Yep. definitely a Cooper's Hawk. Saw several recently when wife and I went on a "Raptor Tour" at Bosque Del Apache.

I still think it is a sharp-shinned hawk based on the square tail. Cooper's has a more rounded tail. But they are very hard to tell a part. See photos from Cornell site.

I think you are correct. Also a Coopers legs and toes are quite stout looking compared to the spindly ones of the Sharpies.

Hard t tell on the tail of the bird in the picture, but look at the head - the Cooper's head has a lot of white/brown spotting, whereas the sharp-shinned has a more solidly brown head. The head of the OP's picture seems closer to the Cooper's IMHO.

I am conflicted.

If you look at the chest markings I say Cooper but if you look at the head shape I would say sharpies.

For sure this is an immature bird.

Thanks for all the inputs.

I know which ever one I decide on someone will tell me I am wrong!

A copy of this bird's picture has been forwarded to a friend, who is also an expert raptor rehabilitator. As soon as I hear from her I will answer our question.

Just received an e-mail in which she says she can't tell from the photo. Whichever it is, the photograph has great detail, at least what we can see. Nice shot.

Skinny legs, smaller size, probably a Sharpie. Sharpies are smaller, like a dove in size, and have more colorful breast plumage, but gender and age will make identification harder, and the juvies really do resemble each other. I can never tell them apart in pictures, but on the wing or perched on a tree branch it's easier. Coopers are more like crows in size. They also have larger heads in proportion to their bodies, so this could also be a juvie Cooper. I am confused. :)
