Wow - with the IS in that SX50 you will seldom need a tripod or mono pod Get an OP/Tec single camera harness with the elastic straps - with one of them your camera is always at lower chest height and instantly available - also at the right height to snug inside your jacket/coat in the rain & mist.

Definitely a monopod. Two Alaska trips and a safari all showed that was the only viable choice. I have been allowed in museums with the monopod because the security people think I have a walking stick and wave me through with no questions. Choose a sectional one that will collapse to fit in your carry-on or checked suitcase. Some airlines view a monopod as a weapon. Enjoy!
