Thanks Earl, so glad you liked and thanks for looking. They are very beautiful and agile ducks which prefer to nest in tree cavities, but between lack of mature trees for nesting and heavy hunting pressure, their numbers were greatly diminished. Hunting seasons were closed for many years, and they adapted to nesting in artificial nesting boxes, and bounced back, thankfully. They have been nesting in a duplex box that I built over twenty years ago, and we have been fortunate in witnessing several broods leaving the nest shortly after hatching.

Thanks so much for looking, Vicki and I agree about being lucky! Attended a one day wildlife photo class several weeks ago, and our instructor said that when approaching the subject, we should respect their zone of comfort. Well, sometimes I think the zone of comfort for our Wood ducks is about a mile. They are hunted in the winter hunting season fairly close to our property. I purchased a small camouflaged Tent before Christmas in the hope that it would allow me to position myself closer to them and finally installed it early one morning several months later, hoping that in a few days they would become accustomed to it. To my surprise they were coming within fifteen feet or so within the hour and that's how these photos were taken!

Great pair of shots Swampy! These guys are quite rude to me... Won't let me get close enough for a decent shot!

Thanks Frodo, and thanks for looking! The only way I pulled it off was by hiding in a camo tent, as I was telling Vicki!!
