This new lens looks very promising. Seven aperture blades instead of five, a metal mount, and STM AF. It lists for $125.00 and the build looks comparable to the 40mm STM.

Have seen that too, but IQ looks on the shitty site (if you look at the FTM chart)!

I see reference to IQ popping up all the time.
I know what a persons IQ refers to but what is a lenses IQ?
Cheers

I can't imagine Canon would put out a replacement lens with IQ worse that what it is replacing. I'll be very interested to read some of the reviews in the hands of some pros.
Image Quality is more than just sharpness. Color and contrast are important along with distortion and color fringing. The way the background blurs can be pleasing or distracting.
The 50mm f/1.8 MKII was never the best for image quality but for $100.00 it had a lot going for it. I think the new 50mm STM corrects some of the shortfalls of the MKII version; better build, metal mount, better auto focus, and 7 curved aperture blades.

That's right, but looking at the charts, it still leaves a lot to be desired!

Picky, picky, picky! It is an inexpensive lens and improves upon the previous one. Go buy a higher end Canon or third party lens if it doesn't meet your needs! There are plenty to choose from.

So you are not picky when it comes to choose a lens, you just buy what's out there, don't care about image quality?

No, not at all, I look at quality and value within price bands....
I don't expect the same from a $100 lens as I would from a $500 lens or a $2000 lens. Not everybody can justify the extra cost or quality.
Even the old EF 50mm f/1.8 II was reviewed pretty positively for optics when stopped down a bit. Build a little less robust than would be desired for hard use, micro motor, bokeh not great but overall considered good for the money. It is not a bad lens, I use mine occasionally when it meets the need.
The new one improves the optics a bit apparently, the bokeh, the STM over the older auto focus micro motor, build and overall quality for very little additional cost. It's pretty good for around $125.
Myself, when I want to use a lens in that category, the first one I pick up is my EOS modified FL 55mm f/1.2 which is around 40+ years old and completely manual and is a really sweet piece of glass, but the modification to EOS compatibility cost as much as the new 50mm f/1.8 STM lens.
So I sort of read your post as a rather dismissive, arrogant and elitist take on what is an improvement on a very low cost lens, and can beat many zoom lenses for low light and other usage situations.
Perhaps you did not intend it to be interpreted that way....

The IQ is comparable to the v2. For the newcomer I think this would be a good prime, but, I'll hang on to my v2 and when it break, that is when I'll replace it.
