An Eastern Phoebe mommy now resides on our porch

The vertical shot below looks merely like a photo of a part of our front porch.

But if you look closely, as I did with a Nikon P600 for the horizontal shot, you'll see that an Eastern Phoebe has taken up residence, sitting on her eggs in a nest she built out of mud (for the base), grass, and feathers. Yes, in the process, she splattered small spots of mud all around.

She's been there for about two weeks now, but we haven't been able to get a peek at her until yesterday. You can see a spot of light in her right eye (I didn't use a flash), and her tail sticking out to the right. Daddy Phoebe has faithfully been bringing food to her. They eat insects. Naturally, we aren't using this front door until the nest is empty.

About five years ago, the same thing happened in the same spot, atop the light.

How cool! So nice to hear you're going to give them a free pass to raise the babies.

Do you turn on the light to keep her warm at night?

When I said to my wife that we should consider doing that, her response was quick...and smart: "That would only attract the owls." And we have lots of owls in the trees around us.

Ironically, while our Phoebe was working hard to make the nest, we watched a special on our public TV station that was all about birds and their nests, with lots of closeup video showing in detail how they construct these small miracles. Fascinating. You can probably stream it from the PBS home page.
