camera repair woes

Finally sent the camera in for repair (shutter wheel not working) and I got back the estimate. Parts is $11 and labor is <gulp> $200. Details state a replacement of the wheel assembly and the obligatory check, clean and service to help justify the labor cost. Now after all this there is zero warranty on the repair.

I just hope that they can fix and return the camera before I leave for NY next week. I'm not used to working without a back up or second camera.

Thank you all for listening. I am getting down off the soap box now. Next...

Nikon gives either 3 or 6 months (forget which) warranty on all repairs.

Cost for parts is reasonable. The labor is undoubtedly due to the depths to which they have to disassemble the camera in order to replace the $11 part.

Then they will check, clean and service it so you will not be disappointed after the Brown truck has departed.

You will probably be as delighted as I when last I sent a camera in for depot repair.

As does Canon repair but Canon Canada has a $200 flat fee repair charge. I sent it in to another repair facility and I was hoping the $50 estimate fee would cover what I hoped was a loose connection. There I go, thinking again when I'm not equipped.

You mean you have only one backup camera?!!! :D

Labor is always the killer - so much time involved. It's like that with everything. The part is irrelevant.

Beats my last air conditioning repair. Service call was $74 and the simple light switch swap out was $218 (about 100 times what it was worth). The tech took about 10 minutes after he got here to diagnose and replace the faulty switch. I wonder how he sleeps at night...

Maybe it would help to think of it as a $200 part and $11 labor. I think the base camera clean and checkout is about $150 itself. You should get back a camera in very nice condition and know that things should be working correctly. Cheaper than a new camera too...

I once had a problem with my front 4 wheel drive. Paid $200 labor to have them tear it down only to find that it was a cracked thrust washer. It was going to take 2-3 days to get the part before they could repair and re assemble. They were going to put it back together for another $200 so I could drive it to work until the part came and happily recharge me $200 to tear it down again, fix the washer and another $200 to re assemble again.

Service manager said, " Oh, I thought you would want to be able to drive it to work until we got the washer". I cheerfully told them they were nuts and it could sit there until they got the part!!! I would drive another vehicle to work.

And I worked for the auto company at the time. So, understand what you are getting and paying to repair. Never went back there for service and wonder how many people they soaked with such actions...

On our AC $378 to put a $17 cap 3 wires to hook up. I just didn`t have one. Continuity was bad. The gentleman was here 15 minutes and I told him what I had found but he wouldn't sell me one even for $100...

Yes, I have been charged $750 plus for a furnace control board that Granger sells for $165. All HVAC guys here do is try to sell you a new $12,000 system they can install the next day... The prices are out of control for service...

I have noticed several in this thread complaining about repair costs for air conditioning systems. I had a similar issue years ago with a contactor set for the compressor/condenser unit. No service facility would sell me the part. Then I called a company which sells electrical components, motors, etc.; they had the part, and it was surprisingly cheap, and it has worked perfectly since I installed it. Can't remember the name of the company. So, if you know what's wrong, call a local electrical supply place and see if they have the part; the manufacturer's dealer won't sell you the part because they want their dealer's employees to benefit from your misfortune.

true they do want the big cost for repair and then they say it will be deducted from a new install. I always get at least 2 bids. AC guy comes out charges me over $550 for a hard start part. Next day the salesman comes out and bids 5100 for a new install on a 3 ton unit. now in that bid was $900 to run new copper to bring it up to code. he then deducted the $550 repair.
Second company comes out and bids with a better unit and bids $300 to run the copper. So company 1 is giving no credit and coming out $150 more to run the copper when he deducts the repair...I guess company 2 will get my business...I may be foolish but I am not a fool

Had electrician friend who was called out at night to look at one of his best friends house that lost partial power. Found a bad breaker, replaced it. Problem solved. Friend offered him some compensation for his labor after homeowner paid for breaker. Electrician told him $50 would cover it. His friend whined that he thought it was a bit steep for replacing a breaker. Electrician told him he wasn't charging him to replace it, but the fee was for knowing which breaker to replace. True story. Happened in the 80's. He got his $50, and lost a friend.

This is why I like living in a "cold" state. :D

A/C is nice, but not essential.

Have been in contact with Canon service department within last two weeks on an old 5D that seems to be exhibiting more noise lately. They said it is possible but unlikely sensor is failing and an option is to send it in for cleaning and an 18 point check for $129. I think $200 cost is consistent with a factory repair.

wow the Catskills...would be nice...that's why I see so many people down from up north in the winter and they vanish in April for 5 months...that's when you see the A/c salesmen driving their new Cadillacs coming to your house practicing their bs walking up to your door.
I maybe foolish but I am not a fool
