Tody's banner ad shows this primo 24-105 f4 L IS lens on sale for &624 and up through Amazon. What's the deal with Warranty??? One of their Q7A posts said there were no warranty cards, but they could register the lens with Canon. Where does this leave a buyer for warranty and repair over the life of hte lens.

This is right in my GAS sweet spot, but I'm concerned about the ability to get it services and the US CAnon Warranty coverage.

What about after that??
I've never sent in a Canon lens!! ;-)

Neither have I sent a Canon lens in for work. All I know is when I bought this lens (for a lot more) I found it nearly impossible to take a bad picture. That's true love.

I sent in one of my 24-105mm lens in for service after 5 years! The warranty had long expired. It stopped being able to AF at the wide end. It cost $130.00 plus shipping to repair it.

I just sent my 24-105L in for service at the 11 month mark. They replaced the zoom mechanism and then once it was back I noticed that the focus ring when turned had a very gritty noise (both manual and auto focusing), called Canon and it was shipped right back for them to them to put in a new focus mechanism. All is well now but I was almost three weeks without one of my favorite lenses. All covered under warranty.

I KNOW it is a great lens and I KNOW hw great Canon service is. What I don't know is how the White Box status plays into any warranty issues and getting it serviced later. Am I risking having a lens that becomes like a "Gray Market" status and unrepairable by Canon????

Please comment on the warranty and service issues, thanks. I already want it enough!

I believe the white box just means it was part of a kit at one point. If you are buying from an authorized dealer and they say it comes with a Canon warranty then there is no reason not to buy.

That's theessence of myphone call to Canon Support. Their main effort is to avoid transfer of warranty for re-sold merchandise or used stuff. He even said hey'd fix Gray Market stuff with a proof of Purchase of new equipment.

Craig, my question about if anyone has had a new product repaired under warranty was to see if there is much danger in buying used. I have bought several and sold several lenses and I've never had a problem with a lens(knock on wood)!!
Here is what I know but if you talked to Canon you may already have all your answers. There is almost more miss-info about this than whether to turn IS off on a tripod!!
A white box means it's a refurb and they are stamped with "refurb".
A kit only comes with a white box if it's a refurb kit only.
New kits(non-refurb kits), come in std. Canon new boxes.
Warrenties are NOT transferable, no matter how many blank warranty cards you get with it. Canon does not use the warranty cards for anything. Canon uses the original bill of sale for warranty work, not warranty cards.
If you buy the lens/camera from an authorized Canon dealer that bought the item resale from Canon then you are the original purchaser. If not, it's actually a used item even if it's in the box and sealed. If the seller provides you with the original bill of sale then no one knows that you are not that original purchaser and you can get it repaired under warranty for the first 12 mos.
Canon will repair ANY canon product at their regular cost, whether it's grey market, used or had ten owners, as long as it's in service life(that means Canon still makes parts).
The only risk with Canon grey market is that YOU will have to pay for the repair in spite of the fact that it's brand new and you got a warranty card with it, but yes, they will repair it, just for a fee. That's NOT true with all brands.
I personally have not, nor have known anybody that's ever had a problem with a Canon product. But my circle is pretty small, as you could probably guess by how much people yell at me here, I have no friends!!
Good luck with your purchase. If it was me, I would buy it!! I bought one used lens that's out of service life for $3.5K and so far it still works!!!

PS, you probably already know all this but maybe someone else following this can benefit.

For me, never needed any work on any Canon lens. However my 7D had the shutter release go bad outside of warranty and it wasn't inexpensive to get it repaired.

If there are no warranty cards then there is no warranty, whether you register it or not. Are you sure it is brand new? Even a white box lens should have a warranty card, whether US or grey market. Canon will repair even it's grey market lenses, but the owner has to pay the going rate. Real good chance you will never need the warranty anyway.

Thanks, Sharpie,
To make my Canon Tech Support conversation short, Canon isn't Nikon. Their biggest concern is to keep the warranty non-transfrerrable. And in any cse they'll fix the lens for a fee. Can't ask for more than that, really. Especially since the far more likely case will be that I will likely bear some fault in anything going wrong with this product.
Thanks for the clarificarion on the White Box. So, I need to compare ths price to refurb. OK, still great. KEH has this lens used in the same price range, so getting in on this lens at this price is something I'll try to do. Retired, fixed budget and just a minor league Baseball usher's pay to finance the habit! But all with good cheer and hopefully keeping a good eye.

What Canon tech support said today was that they use the warranty cards for marketing information and determine warranty from proof of purchase, period. So, keep those receipts! And i did have the venerable 28-135 first IS lens repaired under warranty. Roberts, nice folks that they are, provided it for me and I got the lens back good as new.

How about purchase the lens already..... When you receive it try registering it with Canon. If it registers great, if it doesn't return the lens.

Since Canon has a repair dept, I suspect they repair lenses. Unlike Nikon, I think Canon will repair gray market lenses - for a price.
