I like to trek to places carrying a long lens with me. The cases that came with the lenses are strictly manufactures eye wash in my opinion.
Has anyone had any experience making a lens case that could be slung over a shoulder? I'm toying with the use of insulated PVC tubing and high density foam inside for the lens containment.
Would appreciate any ideas.
Ron
What do you shoot with? I know that my Canon 100-400 case has a belt loop, and I simply run a shoulder strap through it and carry it that way. The PVC is a good idea, but it is hard and clanky, I suspect you will not like it banging against the camera and other stuff.
My lenses collapsed are from 14 to 33 inches.
Hard is what I want, to protect the lens. I do get in some awkward situations.

Ron, you don't say what lens?
Most BIG lenses would take a piece of PVC that would weigh more than the lens, not to mention a tripod as well!!
By not a backpack?!

Yes, have a backpack with tripod attached, but lenses are too big for pack if I want to take a couple of cameras. Thus need for a durable enclosure for the long lens.

You still haven't said what lenses - even when specifically asked.
People cannot advise fully without giving them all the information to work with.

Its a bit like pulling teeth.
Which couple of long lenses for your 2-1/4 would they be?

Why are the particular lenses important? Just looking for information on cases anyone has built, and if they have, how.

Why do you have so much aversion to providing the detail?
There may be cases already available for your lenses that you think inadequate but aren't really.
People cannot recommend what to build unless they know what it has to be better than.
The materials that someone is going to recommend may come in different sizes.
Someone might have an aversion to taking up hours of their valuable time, to explain to you how to spend several hundred dollars to build a case to hold a $20 lens.
I repeat - what is your aversion to providing the information up front?
People that ask questions like yours, are timewasters, and many many people have much more valuable things to spend their time on than just wasting it on someone who can't even provide the necessary information when directly asked.
Sorry for wasting your time.

I'm sorry that you still haven't provided the information that would allow people to answer your question properly.

We made a carry bag for a pair of Nikon long lenses, a 600 and the 200/400, from an Army surplus Bergen with the addition of some stitched in fabric separators, padded with foam rubber and some neoprene attached with glue inside the bag as additional padding. This gets used for long walking with these lenses and the tripod strapped on. Works very well.

What lens?
I use a Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW for my 600mm F4.
